94% Looper

All Critics (231) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (216) | Rotten (15)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

Looper is among the cleverest, most skillfully crafted and entertaining sci-fi thrillers of the past 20 years.

The smartest, most stylish and most outright entertaining science-fiction film of the year.

A thought-provoking, heart-pounding take on the applications and ethics of time travel which, oddly enough, doubles up as a lesson in the importance of good parenting.

This is one of those rare genre movies (like the original TERMINATOR) that reminds us that Sci-Fi can be smart. It's much more than just a bunch of special effects and explosions. It's what all movies should aspire to be.

While it sometimes feels like it's trying to do much, Looper manages to be a creditable and exciting sci-fi flick that homages the past while carving out a unique identity.

Much as he did in Brick, Johnson creates a carefully drawn world in Looper that exists by its own particular set of rules.

... has an irresistible energy and a don't-give-a-damn unpredictability ...

Beautifully crafted, acted and written.

Anchors high-concept thrills and captivating ideas in a world of challenging morality and intricate personal consequences.

Truly imaginative but all the twists and turns make the overall film difficult to follow. Plus Gordon-Levitt has not reached leading man status yet.

Kind of a reverse-"Terminator" without any of James Cameron's wit (or wisdom),

An endlessly creative mind-blowing film that captures everything right about the movie going experience. Johnson conjures up the most imaginative action/science fiction film since 'Inception.'

Part science fiction, part mob movie, and with a nice infusion of dark comedy at just the right moments, Looper is Johnson's best movie yet, and manages to be hugely entertaining, affecting, and thought-provoking.

takes us far beyond the film's high-concept premise into the kind of emotional terrain that too often escapes even the best genre filmmakers

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Looper may not take us back to the future as satisfyingly as Robert Zemeckis' Marty McFly trilogy or James Cameron's Terminator franchise, but writer-director Rian Johnson does enough right to all but guarantee that he has a future cult film on the books.

The best time travel films play on emotion rather than logic, and once Looper realises this and drops all the tail-chasing about how time travel works it settles into the engrossing action/drama about destiny it should have been from the get go.

Kerosene lamps identified as big source of black carbon

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? The primary source of light for more than a billion people in developing nations is also churning out black carbon at levels previously overlooked in greenhouse gas estimates, according to a new study led by researchers at UC Berkeley and the University of Illinois.

Results from field and lab tests found that 7 to 9 percent of the kerosene in wick lamps -- used for light in 250-300 million households without electricity -- is converted to black carbon when burned. In comparison, only half of 1 percent of the emissions from burning wood is converted to black carbon.

Factoring in the new study results leads to a twenty-fold increase in estimates of black carbon emissions from kerosene-fueled lighting. The previous estimates come from established databases used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and others. One kilogram of black carbon, a byproduct of incomplete combustion and an important greenhouse gas, produces as much warming in a month as 700 kilograms of carbon dioxide does over 100 years, the authors said.

"The orange glow in flames comes from black carbon, so the brighter the glow, the more black carbon is being made," said study principal investigator Tami Bond, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "If it's not burned away, it goes into the atmosphere."

The findings, published online this month in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, are coming out at the same time that the United Nations Climate Change Conference kicks off in Doha, Qatar. While officials from around the world are seeking effective policies and guidelines for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the study authors note that the simple act of replacing kerosene lamps could pack a wallop toward that effort.

"There are no magic bullets that will solve all of our greenhouse gas problems, but replacing kerosene lamps is low-hanging fruit, and we don't have many examples of that in the climate world," said study co-author Kirk Smith, professor at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and director of the Global Health and Environment Program. "There are many inexpensive, cleaner alternatives to kerosene lamps that are available now, and few if any barriers to switching to them."

Smith pointed to lanterns with light-emitting diodes that can be powered by solar cells or even advanced cookstoves that generate electricity from the heat produced. Such technology, said Smith, is already available in developing countries.

The researchers used kerosene lamps purchased in Uganda and Peru and conducted field experiments there to measure the emissions. They repeated the tests in the lab using wicks of varying heights and materials, and kerosene purchased in the United States as well as in Uganda.

The study authors noted that converting to cleaner light sources would not only benefit the planet, it would help improve people's health. A recent epidemiological study in Nepal led by Smith and other researchers at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health, for example, found that women who reported use of kerosene lamps in the home had 9.4 times the rate of tuberculosis compared with those who did not use such lamps.

"Getting rid of kerosene lamps may seem like a small, inconsequential step to take, but when considering the collective impact of hundreds of millions of households, it's a simple move that affects the planet," said study lead author Nicholas Lam, a UC Berkeley graduate student in environmental health sciences.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, U.S. Agency for International Development and Environmental Protection Agency helped support this research.

Proud of a spacious family home in an idyllic setting... | This is ...

I DEFY anyone to not be utterly charmed by this stunning property that has everything a family could possibly want. It is spacious, in spotless condition, the interior flows well and is ideal for parties, it's close to schools and major roads yet peaceful enough to have a lot of wildlife in the garden.

The basic details of Copper Beeches, at The Hollow, Caverswall, are impressive enough. A large house sitting in an established mature garden, it has three reception rooms, three double bedrooms, an en suite, a large conservatory, and a double bedroom with en suite downstairs obviously suitable as an annexe.

  1. Jean, pictured with husband Alan Stonier, lives in a big house on a plot she remembers as a field when she was a child.

But that alone does not give you the flavour of what it is like inside and, more than most properties I have visited, this one will reward a viewing.

It is home to Alan and Jean who says: "I grew up around here and I love the Caverswall area and this home is very special. It is a very warm and friendly house and it feels very peaceful.''

I was struck by the light and airy feel inside because there is a substantial amount of glazing filling the house with daylight. It certainly adds to the welcoming feel I had when the couple invited me in.

A nice reception hall leads to the living room which has three big windows giving a nice view over the gardens and it has a period style fireplace with wooden surround, cast iron grate with decorative tile inset and open fire.

The dining room next to the kitchen has French doors opening to a great conservatory which can also be accessed from a lovely snug which has a modern, remotely controlled gas fire that is a feature in itself and I soon had the sense that with these rooms flowing from one to the other that they would lend themselves to creating a great party house, something Alan confirms: "This is a very hospitable home and we do have a lot of people staying and have great parties. We have a big, permanent barbecue on the terrace and once we cooked for 70 and the house works really well for that.''

The modern kitchen has fitted appliances and oak doors on the base and wall cupboards add to the sense of quality. There is also plenty of space for a breakfast table which is where I sat with Alan and Jean as they chatted about their home. Off the kitchen is a useful utility room and a downstairs w.c.

A really big attraction is the annexe bedroom/en suite shower that overlooks the garden and would be ideal for someone with reduced mobility or a teenager wanting some privacy. I think this adds a lot to the house.

G oing upstairs Copper Beeches continues to charm. The landing has a lovely dormer window and I could readily imagine a small sofa beneath it being a nice place for a quiet read and there is lots of storage space built into the eaves: "One thing we are not short of is storage'' says Jean.

The master bedroom is big, with fitted furniture and has both a dressing area and an en suite shower/w.c. Again, dormer windows work their magic in allowing in plenty of natural light and adding interesting roof shapes.

Both the other two bedrooms are doubles and echo the master in having fitted furniture and dormers and the main bathroom has a corner bath with shower over. I should say here that at every turn one is struck by the quality and condition in which they have kept the house.

Outside, the house is approached by a drive protected by electronically controlled gates ? "no one comes here that we don't want to come here,'' says Alan ? and the eight copper beeches along its length reveal how the house was named.

There is a big double garage and ample parking at the front and behind is a lovely garden, a mix of lawn, terrace ? with that barbecue! ? a small kitchen garden and a brilliant wooden summerhouse/workshop/office that has power and light.

Caverswall is lovely little village close to the A50 and has good schools within walking distance.

Jean says: "We want to move to somewhere smaller but we know we will miss this place. It has been the most wonderful family home and we will take a lot of happy memories from it, but it is time now to let someone else enjoy what this house has given us ? a marvellous home that is easy to live in, is convenient and has a very peaceful feel."

GOP scoffs at White House?s ?fiscal cliff? opening bid

Republican House Speaker John Boehner speaks at a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday. (J. Scott Applewh??Bolstered by his reelection, President Barack Obama on Thursday made a detailed opening bid to Congressional Republicans for averting the so-called fiscal cliff -- the mix of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that risk plunging the economy into a new recession come 2013. Republicans flatly rejected the offer, which mostly repackaged Obama's previous budget and jobs-creation plans while looking to avoid future fights over raising the country's debt limit.

Obama's proposal, delivered by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to Republican House Speaker John Boehner, called for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenues over 10 years plus some $400 billion in savings in popular entitlement programs including Medicare, the government health care plan for seniors. It also included some relief for Americans hit by the home foreclosure crisis and an extension of both the payroll tax holiday and unemployment assistance.

The package also includes a roughly $50 billion jobs plan, mostly infrastructure spending.

The White House is using the blueprint to address the thorny issue of hiking the federal debt limit.

Right now, Congressional approval is required before the federal debt ceiling can be raised. Opposition to boosting the debt limit by many Republican lawmakers in 2011 brought the U.S. government close to default.?Still smarting from that debacle, the White House wants to give lawmakers the right to block a debt increase rather than vote to approve it.

The offer landed with a thud on Capitol Hill, where Republicans bluntly rejected it and expressed shock that the president would essentially stick to the plan he trumpeted starting in September 2011 and all through the campaign. It includes tax increases on the richest Americans, something Republicans have publicly refused to approve.

"I remain hopeful that productive conversations can be had in the days ahead, but the White House has to get serious," Boehner told reporters. "This is not a game. Jobs are on the line. The American economy is on the line. And this is a moment for adult leadership."

"No substantive progress has been made in the talks between the White House and the House over the last two weeks," Boehner charged.

In response, the White House redoubled its assault on Republicans for refusing to raise taxes on income above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families.

"Right now, the only thing preventing us from reaching a deal that averts the fiscal cliff and avoids a tax hike on 98 percent of Americans is the refusal of Congressional Republicans to ask the very wealthiest individuals to pay higher tax rates," spokesman Josh Earnest said.?"It's time for Republicans in Washington to join the chorus of other voices - from the business community to middle class Americans across the country - who support a balanced approach that asks more from the wealthiest Americans."

In a sign of the political gamesmanship at work, Republican aides ? not the White House -- disclosed the offer even as they panned it. And the early response from White House aides was to point to Obama's victory over Mitt Romney to suggest that Americans will side with the president over his political foes.

Despite Boehner's blunt words, there have been signs on both sides that a compromise could be worked out. Some Republicans have publicly said they will support raising tax revenues, a party taboo, while the White House signaled that Obama would not insist that the wealthiest Americans pay the same tax rates they faced under Bill Clinton.

Chris Moody contributed to this report.

Though interrelated in many ways in which, NLP and hypnosis are 2 terribly totally different concepts. Hypnosis is more of an art while NLP is additional of a science. NLP or otherwise known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a method used by many psychotherapists to change folks behavioral patterns. This approach has been widely adopted within the sector of psychology.
Although NLP has been widely adopted inside the medical field, its usages have also unfold to the industrial sectors especially among the scope of human resources training. Many coaching experts these days use NLP to bolster their coaching methodologies. This can be to improve the quality of their training during their coaching sessions, workshops and seminars. Hypnosis is additionally a suggests that that is used to influence the mind and therefore the behavior of an individual, but this process is very unconventional, however none the less popular. Hypnosis generally targets the person?s subconscious. In this someone is commanded to perform actions, in an exceedingly state of 0.5 sleep. Boehner said Thursday that he continues to be open to the Democrats' call for policies that would increase tax revenue, but only in exchange for an overhaul of the federal government's expensive entitlement programs.</p> <p>"Revenue is only on the table if there are serious spending cuts that are part of this agreement," Boehner said.</p> <p>Boehner, an Ohio Republican, confirmed that he spoke to President Barack Obama by phone on Wednesday night about the state of the negotiations. While he characterized the conversation as "straightforward," Boehner declined to discuss details.</p> <p>Moments after Boehner made his remarks, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid held his own press conference with other Democratic Senate leaders, including Patty Murray of Washington, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Charles Schumer of New York. Reid said Democrats would stick with their proposal to let the Bush-era tax rates expire for families that earn more than $250,000 per year and were waiting for Republicans to respond.</p> <p>When asked about Boehner's comments that he would do nothing until Democrats put forth a new proposal, Reid replied: "I don't understand his brain."</p><p>Source: <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/john-boehner-no-substantive-progress-fiscal-cliff-talks-171633540--election.html">http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/john-boehner-no-substantive-progress-fiscal-cliff-talks-171633540--election.html</a></p><p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/lecter.tips/posts/257668947669907">chuck</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lecter.tips/posts/512243292123502">elisabeth hasselbeck</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lecter.tips/posts/395593703827417">fran drescher</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lecter.tips/posts/267072726744311">scarlett o hara</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lecter.tips/posts/101246423360418">pat sajak</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lecter.tips/posts/261636787288228">vanna white</a> <a href="http://www.mybuyings.net">michael robinson</a> </p> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'> <span class='post-author vcard'> Posted by <span class='fn' itemprop='author' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/Person'> <meta content='https://www.blogger.com/profile/03156447541489005562' itemprop='url'/> <a class='g-profile' href='https://www.blogger.com/profile/03156447541489005562' rel='author' title='author profile'> <span itemprop='name'>villanveramarine34</span> </a> </span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> at <meta content='http://insertion-jail.blogspot.com/2012/11/boehner-no-substantive-progress-on-debt.html' itemprop='url'/> <a class='timestamp-link' href='http://insertion-jail.blogspot.com/2012/11/boehner-no-substantive-progress-on-debt.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' itemprop='datePublished' title='2012-11-30T06:14:00-08:00'>6:14 AM</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='http://insertion-jail.blogspot.com/2012/11/boehner-no-substantive-progress-on-debt.html#comment-form' onclick=''> No comments: </a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> <span class='item-control blog-admin pid-1839044958'> <a href='https://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=4887244922415922756&postID=7097870878035476933&from=pencil' title='Edit Post'> <img alt='' class='icon-action' height='18' src='https://resources.blogblog.com/img/icon18_edit_allbkg.gif' width='18'/> </a> </span> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons goog-inline-block'> <a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-email' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=4887244922415922756&postID=7097870878035476933&target=email' target='_blank' title='Email This'><span class='share-button-link-text'>Email This</span></a><a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=4887244922415922756&postID=7097870878035476933&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Internet Business ? 10 Cost Effective Ways to Promote Your Internet ...

Your website will need visitors for you to earn money with your internet business. The biggest challenges for those starting a new internet business are limited resources and money to run marketing campaigns; and limited knowledge on how to cost effectively drive traffic to the website.

There are various ways of promoting your internet business, and some are more costly than others. If you have limited resources to spend on your advertising, then you will need to know about the most effective and yet not very costly methods of drawing traffic to your website.

1. Have an appropriate Domain name for your internet business Although this seems very obvious, it is often underestimated in its importance. It is ideal for your domain name to have some of your internet business? key words to make sure that you can be found when someone does a search for your keywords online.

2. Word of mouth in your circle of influence Everyone has a circle of influence; being people that you interact with in your life. These people are your potential customers; and you must tell them about your internet business. This does not cost you anything. You just have to list all the people you make contact with in your daily routines and identify the best way of telling them about your internet business. Call them, email them, write them or give them your business card.

3. Email Marketing If you have another internet business already, it is recommended that you email your existing customers or if you have a newsletter, your subscribers list; and tell them about your new online business. You can also email all your colleagues in your email address book. The more people you tell about your internet business, the more visitors you will get to your website.

4. Your Email Signature Your email will need to look professional, and you must have in your signature the details about your internet business website: the URL, the business name, email address and other contact details. You can also set up different websites for various purposes. Having your website address in your signature in every email you send out is a cost effective way to promote your internet business.

5. Submit your website to search engines and directories This is another cost effective way of driving traffic to your internet business. It is free if you can manually submit your website to search engines and directories. There are various companies that can submit your website for you at a cost. For your website to be picked up by search engines, you must have on your website high quality unique content and your content must be keyword-rich.

6. Write and distribute articles Writing and distributing articles is one of the very effective ways of driving traffic to your website. There are several objectives that are to be accomplished with writing articles; namely to be picked up by ezine publishers, other websites, and also by offline publishers. By writing high quality articles on a regular basis, you come to be viewed as an authority or expert, which will further make your articles popular. In your articles, you put a resource box to build back-links, or to sell. By submitting articles, you have search engines pick up your website and eventually, send you some free traffic.

7. Link Exchanges It is important to create some links with websites that are similar to yours so that you can get visitors coming to your site via the link on your partners? websites. For your internet business to be successful, you need a lot of traffic. Creating links with partners can be time consuming. If you can afford it, you can use a software called The Link Machine which automates the process for you. Although two way links are important, one way links are even more effective ? and you can create these by other methods such as article submission, forum participation, directory submission etc.

8. Forum Participation There are a lot of forums or groups for almost any interest or niche or business. Participating at these forums, with your email signature that has your website, can help you generate some targeted traffic for your site. You can get more visitors through this, which will support the growth of your internet business.

9. Offer Freebies Giving away free gifts, tools or resources to your prospects is a very powerful way of growing your internet business. Because a visitor to your site benefits by getting some of your freebies, they will be encouraged to come back to your website again in the future, giving you some repeat business.

10. Publish an ezine or newsletter Ezines are a targeted form of advertising, and they can be easy to prepare. Having an ezine helps you create a long term relationship with your potential customers. Over the long term, your subscribers will trust you and will do business with you.

If you consistently use these strategies to promote your internet business, you will see traffic to your website increasing.

Wal-Mart, Sean Combs clothing at Bangladesh factory

21 hrs.

Amid the ash, broken glass and melted sewing machines at what is left of the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory, there are piles of blue, red and off-white children's shorts bearing Wal-Mart's Faded Glory brand. Shorts from hip-hop star Sean Combs' ENYCE label lay on the floor and are stacked in cartons.

An Associated Press reporter searching the factory Wednesday found these and other clothes, including sweaters from the French company Teddy Smith, among the equipment charred in the fire that killed 112 workers Saturday. He also found entries in account books indicating that the factory took orders to produce clothes for Disney, Sears and other Western brands.

Garments and documents left behind in the factory show it was used by a host of major American and European retailers, though at least one of them ? Wal-Mart ? had been aware of safety problems. Wal-Mart blames a supplier for using Tazreen Fashions without its knowledge.

The fire has elevated awareness of something labor groups, retailers and governments have known for years: Bangladesh's fast-growing garment industry ? second only to China's in exports ? is rife with dangerous workplaces. More than 300 workers there have died in fires since 2006.

Police on Wednesday arrested three factory officials suspected of locking in the workers who died in Saturday's fire, the deadliest in the South Asian country's less than 35-year history of exporting clothing.

Local police chief Habibur Rahman said the three will be questioned amid reports that many workers trying to escape the blaze had been locked inside. He said the owner of the factory was not among those arrested.

The three officials were arrested Wednesday at their homes in Savar, the Dhaka suburb where the factory is also located. Rahman did not identify the officials or give their job status.

About 1,400 workers worked at the plant, some 70 percent of them women. Most are from the north, the poorest region of Bangladesh.

Workers who survived the fire say exit doors were locked, and a fire official has said that far fewer people would have died if there had been even one emergency exit. Of the dead, 53 bodies were burned so badly they could not be identified; they were buried anonymously.

The fire started on the ground floor, where a factory worker named Nasima said stacks of yarn and clothes blocked part of the stairway.

Nasima, who uses only one name, and other workers said that when they tried to flee, managers told them to go back to their work stations, but they were ignored.

Dense smoke filled the stairway, making it hard to see, and when the lights went out the workers were left in total darkness. Another worker, Mohammad Rajib, said some people used their cellphones to light their way.

"Everyone was screaming for help," Nasima said. "Total chaos, panic and screaming. Everyone was trying to escape and come out. I was pulling the shirt of a man. I fainted and when I woke up I found myself lying on the road outside the factory.

"I don't know how I survived."

Rajib said the factory conducted a fire drill just three days before the fire broke out, but no one used the fire extinguishers. "Only a selected group of workers are trained to use the extinguishers. Others have no idea how to use them," he said.

The AP reporter who examined the factory Wednesday saw dozens of fire extinguishers with tags indicating they were inspected early this month. Many appeared unused.

Workers expressed support for the factory owner, Delwar Hossain. Rajib said he is "a gentle man" who heeded workers when they protested for more pay and against rough behavior by some managers.

"He took action and fired some of them," he said. "He did not sack any worker. He told us: 'You are my people. If you survive, I will survive.'"

Most the fire's devastation took place on the second and third floors. Sewing and embroidery machines and tables burned to ashes, ceiling fans melted and floor and wall tiles were broken, apparently because of excessive heat. Thick black ash covers everything in the upper floors of the eight-story building.

Much of the clothing on the lower floors was incinerated. Nightgowns, children's shorts, pants, jackets and sweat shirts were strewn about, piled up in some places, boxed in others. Cartons of kids' hooded sweaters, off-white with red and black print, were marked "Disney Pixar."

There were also at least four register books listing buyers including Wal-Mart, Disney, Sears and other companies. Also listed was Li & Fung, a Hong Kong-based buying house that is among the biggest suppliers of garment products from Bangladesh. Li & Fung issued a statement Monday saying it placed orders at the factory for just one company, Kids Headquarters, and that the value of those orders totaled just $111,000.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Interior Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir have said arson is suspected. Police say they have not ruled out sabotage.

Wal-Mart had received an audit deeming the factory "high risk" last year, said it had decided to stop doing business with Tazreen, but that a supplier subcontracted work to the factory anyway. Wal-Mart said it stopped working with that supplier on Monday.

Calls made to The Walt Disney Company and to Sears Holdings were not immediately returned.

Local TV reports said about 3,000 garment workers held protests over the fire Wednesday, blocking roads and throwing stones at some factories and vehicles. It was the third straight day of demonstrations, and as they did previously, factories in the area closed to avoid violence.

Police used batons to disperse the protesters, but no injuries were immediately reported.

According to local television, most factories in the area closed after opening briefly because of the protests ? a common tactic to avoid violence.?

Associated Press writer Farid Hossain in Dhaka, Bangladesh, contributed to this report.?

Serbs frustrated, Kosovars elated as former Kosovo PM acquitted of war crimes

Kosovars celebrated and Serbian media and officials slammed a decision today by the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal at The Hague to acquit former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj war crimes committed during the 1990s.

Agence France-Presse reports that the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) acquitted Mr. Haradinaj and his lieutenant Idriz Balaj of six counts of crimes involving the murder and torture of Serbs and non-Albanians during the war in the Balkans in 1998 and 1999. Another officer, Lahi Brahimaj, was acquitted of four similar counts. The court, presided over by Judge Bakone Justice Moloto, said that despite the accusations, prosecutors failed to prove that the three men were involved in a "joint criminal enterprise" to ethnically cleanse Serbs.

In his ruling, the judge singled out the prosecutors' witnesses as unreliable.

Moloto said that one witness may not have been in the Jablanica detention camp where alleged abuses took place and "may have told what he heard from others."

"There is no credible evidence that Haradinaj was even aware of the crimes committed at Jablanica," Moloto said.

Reuters reports that the acquittal was met with cheers in the courtroom and fireworks in Kosovo, where Haradinaj is considered a hero and served as prime minister for several months in 2005 before being charged by the ICTY, prompting him to step down to deal with the court case. Reuters notes that many in Kosovo expect him to reenter the government as part of Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's coalition. Mr. Thaci, who called the verdict "the strongest evidence that the Kosovo Liberation Army fought a just war for freedom and never committed the crimes of which we were unfairly accused," is, like Haradinaj, a former Kosovar military commander.

The Serbian media and officials quickly condemned the ruling. A government spokesman told AFP that the ruling "legalised Mafia rule in Kosovo," while Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic slammed the acquittal as unjust and political in a statement, reports Serbian radio station B92.

?Unfortunately, expectations that the Hague Tribunal will release Ramush Haradinaj, who was accused of murder, cruel treatment, inhuman actions against non-Albanian, Serb and Roma civilians in the camp of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in Jablanica in 1998 and violation of law and customs of war, have come true,? reads Nikoli??s statement.

?The latest decision of the Tribunal is not based on the law and justice ? the main postulates on which the international court should be based. The Tribunal was apparently founded contrary to the international law and it was founded to try the Serbian people. They want to achieve certain goals that the Serbian public is well aware of,? the president stressed.

Bulgaria's Focus News Agency writes that online Serbian news site S Media reported the acquittal under the headline "Serbia humiliated again."

The acquittal is the second ruling in as many weeks to clear men who are seen as war criminals in Serbia. Earlier this month, two Croatian generals, Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, had their convictions for war crimes overturned by the ICTY. The Associated Press reports that Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic called the ruling "scandalous" and "political and not legal."

The Associated Press notes that while the ruling complicates ongoing, EU-sponsored talks between Serbia and Kosovo ? Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Serbia still considers it a UN-governed domestic region, even as both nations seek to join the EU ? Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has said that his country is unlikely to withdraw from the negotiations.

"Continuation of dialogue and the process of integration in the European Union are in Serbia's interest," he said.

Bob Dole hospitalized

Former Senate Republican Leader and presidential nominee Bob Dole has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Reid, D-Nev., told colleagues on the floor of the U.S. Senate Tuesday evening that Dole, 89 years old, called him a few days ago to tell him that he is at Walter Reed and that it is "not for a checkup."

"He is infirm, he is sick," Reid said of Dole, who has been hospitalized many times over the years. "We should do this to recognize what a great leader Bob Dole is," Reid said.

Sen. John McCain said that Dole also reached out to all senators with an email sent from the hospital Monday to specifically ask for them to support on the Convention of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) legislation. The legislation, which addresses disability rights, is making its way through the Senate.

"I hope my colleagues would, before deciding to vote, at least listen to the letter that was addressed to all of us by Senator Bob Dole," McCain said reading parts of the Dole letter, "As you may know, tomorrow the senate will vote on CRPD. Unfortunately, I am currently at Walter Reed and so cannot call you personally but wanted to connect with you via e-mail and ask for your help. I hope you will support this important treaty."

Dole was the 1996 Republican presidential nominee and 1976 GOP vice-presidential nominee.
