U.S. economy shrinks in 4th quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy shrank from October through December for the first time since the recession ended, hurt by the biggest cut in defense spending in 40 years, fewer exports and sluggish growth in company stockpiles. The decline occurred despite faster growth in consumer spending and business investment.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter. That's a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter and the first contraction since the second quarter of 2009.

Economists said the surprise decrease in the nation's gross domestic product wasn't as bad as it looked. The weakness was primarily the result of one-time factors. Government spending cuts and slower inventory growth subtracted a total of 2.6 percentage points from growth.

Those volatile categories offset a 2.2 percent increase in consumer spending, up from only 1.6 percent in the previous quarter. And business spending on equipment and software rose after shrinking over the summer.

"Frankly, this is the best-looking contraction in U.S. GDP you'll ever see," Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients. "The drag from defense spending and inventories is a one-off. The rest of the report is all encouraging."

Another positive aspect of the report: For all of 2012, the economy expanded 2.2 percent, better than 2011's growth of 1.8 percent.

Exports fell by the most in nearly four years, likely a result of Europe's recession and slower growth in China and some other large developing countries.

The economy may stay weak at the start of the year because Americans are coming to grips with an increase in Social Security taxes that has left them with less take-home pay.

Subpar growth has held back hiring. The economy has created about 150,000 jobs a month, on average, for the past two years. That's barely enough to reduce the unemployment rate, which has been 7.8 percent for the past two months.

Economists forecast that unemployment stayed at the still-high rate again this month. The government releases the January jobs report Friday.

The slower growth in stockpiles comes after a big jump in the third quarter. Companies frequently cut back on inventories if they anticipate a slowdown in sales. Slower inventory growth means factories likely produced less.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar, Inc. said this week that it reduced its inventories by $2 billion in the fourth quarter as global sales declined from a year earlier.

The biggest question going forward is how consumers react to the expiration of a Social Security tax cut. Congress and the White House allowed the temporary tax cut to expire in January, but reached a deal to keep income taxes from rising on most Americans.

The tax increase will lower take home pay this year by about 2 percent. That means a household earning $50,000 a year will have about $1,000 less to spend. A household with two high-paid workers will have up to $4,500 less.

Already, a key measure of consumer confidence plummeted this month after Americans noticed the reduction in their paychecks, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.

Victims awarded $1 billion [PHOTOS[ from 1985 terrorist attacks at Rome and Vienna airports

Victims awarded $1 billion [PHOTOS[ from the 1985 terrorist attacks at Rome and Vienna airports, A federal judge awards over $1 billion each to 26 victims?-- including estates and family members?-- of the deadly 1985 terrorist attacks on the Rome and Vienna airports.

The Rome and Vienna airport attacks in December 1985 were two more instances of airport security failures.?

On December 27, at 08:15 GMT, four gunmen walked to the shared ticket counter for Israel's El Al Airlines and Trans World Airlines at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport outside Rome, Italy, fired assault rifles and threw grenades.? They killed 16 and wounded 99 before three of the attackers were killed while the remaining one, Mohammed Sharam, was wounded and captured by the Italian police.

Minutes later, at the Schwechat Airport (Vienna International Airport) in Vienna, Austria, three terrorists carried out a similar attack. Hand grenades were thrown into crowds of passengers queuing to check-in for a flight to Tel Aviv, killing two people instantly and wounding 39 others.? A third victim died on January 22, 1986, of hand grenade wounds sustained in the attack. After the attack, the terrorists fled by car, and Austrian police gave chase. They killed one terrorist and captured the other two.

In all, the two strikes killed 20, including a child, and wounded around 140. Some contemporary reports claimed the gunmen originally intended to hijack El Al jets at the airports and blow them up over Tel Aviv; others concluded that the attack on waiting passengers was the original plan and that the Frankfurt airport was meant to be hit as well.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola issued the award against Syria. He determined that the attacks by the Abu Nidal Organization could not have taken place ?without Syria?s direct support.?

The cash includes compensatory and punitive damages, not to mention interest. It is going to be difficult to collect, as Syria will be less than likely to pay it. Go here for additional photos.

The Sidebar Desktop

The Sidebar Desktop Drawing the line between useful on-screen information and space to work or play is a constant theme with our featured desktops. Some of them have widgets everywhere, others are open and clean. This week's, from reader lionskingly, draws the line perfectly and reminds us of the days when sidebars and widgets were the norm.

The nice thing about this desktop is that even if you dislike widgets on your desktop, you can fire up your apps and work with all of the space on the right and enjoy the shortcuts, quicklinks, and other tools available in the sidebar on the left. Want a similar setup for your Windows desktop? Here's what you'll need.

  • Any wallpaper you choose?the one here is lionskingly's own photo
  • The Rainmeter system configuration and management utility for Windows
  • The Omnimo skin for Rainmeter to create the time/date display, new email count, shortcut to launch Windows Explorer, and the image slideshow tile at the bottom of the sidebar
  • The All-In-One Player for Rainmeter for the media playback widget in the sidebar
  • The Ecqlipse 2 Icon Pack to replace the default system icons
  • The Tweak UI to remove the shortcut arrows

That's all there is to it. It's a functional custom sidebar that won't get in the way if you have apps open and you're working or gaming, but it still gives you quick access to useful controls. If you're having trouble getting Rainmeter to behave, check out our guide to Rainmeter for tips, or visit the original thread in our #featured-desktop forum to post your questions.

Do you have a good-looking, functional desktop that you want to see featured here? Submit it?along with where you got the wallpaper, skins, and geeklets?to us for review. We have two different ways you can share it with us:

Linux, Mac, Windows, all are welcome. Whatever you choose to use, include a description of how you made your desktop when you send it in. Without that, we can't tell others how to make it for themselves so they can be featured too!

The Quest for Vertical Axis Wind Turbines Despite Failures

A small-scale vertical axis wind turbine designed by Wing Power Energy. Image: courtesy of WPE

The vision is beautiful, if not somewhat tried: a large cluster of 360 foot tall towers encircled with long, slightly cupped blades, similar to airplane wings, spinning in the wind like a wind vane. The result? An outpouring of clean electricity at the Megawatt (MW) scale.

That?s what Harry Ruda, CEO of Wing Power Energy, a small vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) company, sees when he imagines his turbines coming of age. He?s one of the believers out there gallantly chasing the dream of making VAWTS big.

Currently, his 2-kilowatt capacity turbines stand 34 feet tall. However diminutive (both in terms of height and output), Ruda believes these turbines are the blueprint for the next generation of wind energy, that when scaled up, will revamp wind power at the utility level, ushering in wind 3.0.

The quest to slay the faulty dragon of conventional, or horizontal axis, wind turbines (HAWTS) has been an impossible one, thus far. The domination of?conventional wind comes from their reliability, efficiency and increasingly low cost, despite vertical?s touted improvements ? less expensive to build and maintain, safer for birds and bats, quieter, and their ability to use less open space.

?VAWTs are a perfectly legitimate technology, but these are not toys or lawn ornaments,? enthuses Paul Gipe, a renewable energy advocate and analyst, who?s worked in the industry for over 30 years, ?They are supposed to produce electricity, and must compete with all the other machines that produce electricity. Right now, no one produces a VAWT that is more cost effective than a conventional wind turbine.?

There are enough examples of VAWT failure to solidify this air of doubt. According to Gipe, in California in the 1980s, hundreds of VAWTs were in operation producing millions of kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. Those turbines were not cost effective and were less reliable, as evidenced by their aluminum blades weakening and flying off after operating for several hundreds of hours (Eeeek!). Not one of these turbines is operating today.

More recently, a handful of small startups have tried to take up the cause. Helix Wind, a company that seemed to be heading in the right direction, ended its run due to financial troubles. Another, Windspire Energy, received accolades for its streamline design, was promoted in Popular Science?s ?Best of What?s New? in 2008, and then declared Chapter 11 last year when it lost huge amounts of funds while repairing unreliable parts under warranty.

The problem, says John O. Dabiri, the Director for the Center for Bioinspired Wind Energy, California Institute of Technology, is that even though multiple companies are premiering new design developments like improved efficiency of 10-15%, they?ve still ignored the Achilles heal of vertical axis wind ? fees and functionality.

?The main goal should be to change the cost and reliability of the designs, not its efficiency,? said Dabiri. ?If a 2kw turbine costs more than $5,000.00 the company is blowing smoke about its viability.?

This means a turbine would have to be in the range of $1-$2 per kilowatt of maximum power production, and about 5 cents/kwh of electricity to get anywhere close to being competitive with the current fossil fuel market. It would also have to operate smoothly for about 20 years.

If this $5,000 cost point is the measure of success, Wing Energy?s current turbine isn?t likely to make headlines soon their small turbine sells for about $10,000. The Economies of scale bear much of this blame, since until a product is mass-produced, it?s difficult to keep manufacturing, installation, and distribution costs low. However, so too is the material choice.

?We do think there?s a lot of promise for VAWTs,? said Dabiri speaking on the future, but added that the [designers] need to start by using the right materials for small turbines before trying their hand at large wind.?

It?s this sliver of hope that keeps companies trying, including Venger Wind, Wepower Eco, and Urban Green Energy. This is the list that Wing Power wants to best with their turbine that combines the savonius and darrieus design into one technology, allowing it to operate very efficiently in low and high wind speed. This design is already being utilized on the micro wind scale to further the reach of cellphones.

?We believe that verticals will ultimately rule the day and replace horizontals because of their innate benefits,? says Ruda pitching his concept. ?One of our missions is to prove this theory by starting with modeling 100 kilowatt capacity turbines and then moving to megawatt.?

Bill Gates: Finance tax should aid world's poor - The Local

Bill Gates was the star attraction at a German Social Democratic Party (SPD) meeting in Potsdam on Monday, calling for world hunger to be fought with taxes raised on financial transactions.

SPD lead Sigmar Gabriel said at the meeting he stood behind the European Union plan to invest 0.7 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in development policies.

Microsoft founder Gates, one of the world's richest men, has long focused his efforts on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which funds health and education projects around the world.

He was invited to the Potsdam meeting of the centre-left SPD leadership meeting to talk with them about the foundation. He called for Germany and Europe not to abandon their contributions, despite the financial crisis.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Gates said the world was on the brink of great victories in the fight against illness and global poverty. "Germany plays a decisive role in enabling us to bank on success," he told the SPD paper Vorw?rts (Forwards).

"Development aid only counts for a fraction of public spending in most donor countries. Cuts in this area will not solve our budgetary problems," he said.

He said that great strides had been made in public health matters over the past 20 years - with the number of children dying before the age of five shrinking from 20 million in 1960 to less than 6.9 million in 2011.

But enormous differences remained. "We still have a long way ahead of us to ensure that every child that is born has the same chance of a healthy life regardless of whether it is born in a rich or a poor country," said Gates.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama honored the Miami Heat for winning the 2012 NBA Championship title after falling short just a year before.

"Everybody doing their part, is what finally put the Heat over the top," Obama said, as he welcomed the team to the White House Monday to celebrate their victory.

The Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games in the NBA Finals last June.

The president also recognized the franchise's work off the court. He thanked them for supporting military service members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Obama said one of the things he's proudest of is that many of the team members? including LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade? "take their roles as fathers seriously."

"For all the young men out there who are looking up to them all the time, for them to see somebody who cares about their kids and is there for them day in and day out, that's a good message to send," Obama said.

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the team hopefully will serve as an inspiration to the nation of what can be done "when you come together and sacrifice your egos for a greater goal" and "hard-hat work ethic."

James, who presented Obama with an autographed basketball, said the team including members that hail from Illinois, Texas, Michigan, Ohio and South Dakota were honored to be in the executive mansion.

"We're in the White House right now, which is like, like 'mama I made it,'" James said, as the audience laughed and cheered.

The crowd of well-wishers included actress Gabrielle Union, U.N. ambassador Susan Rice, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Frederica Wilson. The Heat last visited the White House after winning the 2006 title.

Teen's Choking Game Death Leads Mom to Education Effort ...

Since Jeana Monroe?s 15-year-old son RJ Moore died on Dec. 4, she?s been driven to educate people about what the choking game is so that teens stop dying from playing it.

RJ died as a result of playing a choking game, which is a way to experience a kind of high by depriving the body of oxygen to the point of fainting. While the game is certainly dangerous even with others to act as a safeguard, for RJ, the game turned deadly.

?They play it at parties? and it?s a regular habit of these kids, but us parents don?t know anything about it or if we do know about it we think that it won?t happen to our child,? Jeana said.

Medical examiner Tom Terry told Jeana that while RJ died by playing the choking game, there?s no code for this type of death and officially his death was ruled accidental, but the cause was ?probable to choking game.?

This designation is cause for concern for Jeana because the Center for Disease Control doesn?t have a code for keeping track of how many people die of the choking game, but there?s a petition circulating to change that.

?So many kids have died of this, but there are no stats to keep track of it,? she said. ?So we have no idea how many kids are dying from it, but it seems to me that it?s a silent epidemic.?

The details surrounding RJ?s death haunt Jeana. She remembers where the chairs were positioned in his room, the type of belt he used and how the belt was positioned around his neck. But she also remembers how much RJ loved his brothers.

?My kid was such a good kid,? Jeana said. ?We re-did his room to help with the healing process and his little brother Maxwell, who just turned two, keeps wanting to go in there. He says he needs to go see angel and he?ll go in there and just sit in the room and say, ?I see angel, I see angel.?

?You have to wonder, does he see something??

Living with a broken heart, Jeana is dedicating her time and energy to educating parents and teens. She thinks about the signs that RJ was displaying that, if she would have known more about it, would have told her he was playing the choking game: the red marks on his neck, his bloodshot eyes, complaints of stomachaches and headaches, the wear marks on his bed posts, and the fact that he kept asking for belts, but didn?t wear them.

?A lot of schools are afraid to mention this because they think they are giving ideas to our children, but the truth is that they already know what it is and we?re doing a disservice to them in not talking about it,? she said.

And she doesn?t want other parents to go through what she?s going through.

So in her mind?s eye Jeana can see herself making a commercial ? a public service announcement ? warning kids about the dangers of the choking game. She would introduce herself and tell people about RJ. She would tell them about what the choking game is and how it?s not cool to do because when her son did it, he died.

?When you go through something like this, your heart is just broken,? Jeana said. ?If kids won?t listen to anything else, I wish they would just know this ?you could potentially ruin your family. I?m never going to be the same again.?

A benefit, which is being held to raise awareness of what the choking game is and to raise money to help pay for the hospital bills from RJ's death and to pay for funeral expenses, will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Feb. 2 at Bar 525, 525 Wisconsin Ave.

Stick shift foils carjackers trying to steal Corvette

By Isolde Raftery, Staff Writer, NBC News

Randolph Bean of Oviedo, Fla., had pulled over late Sunday night to text message his wife when two would-be carjackers approached his sporty yellow Corvette.

One, holding a gun, forced him to the ground while the other hopped in the driver?s seat, Bean, 51, told WKMG Local 6.

But there was a problem: The aspiring carjacker didn?t know how to start Bean?s car, a 2002 Millennium Yellow Z06 Corvette. (The car, used, sells for about $19,000.)

"The guy started screaming at me, 'How do I start the car?'" Bean told WKMG.?Finally, the other guy, still holding Bean at gunpoint, hollered back, ?It?s a stick!?

?I had to tell him four different times that you have to push in the clutch because it?s a standard transmission,? Bean told myfoxorlando.com.

The two assailants ? Bean said they were handsome young men -- ultimately ran away with his phone, wallet and keys. The wallet, he said, was special because his wife made it.

?My first thought was I guess we don?t have driver?s ed in school anymore because no one knows how to drive a stick,? he told myfoxorlando.com. ?And my second thing was, ?Don?t shoot me because you can?t start the car! I am trying to help you out here.??

Fragile economy, other global woes dominated Davos

(AP) ? The fragile state of the world economy, coupled with the relentless turmoil in Syria and the rocky fallout from the Arab Spring, dominated discussions during this year's annual gathering of the global elite at Davos, leaving many participants uneasy about what lies ahead as they left for home Sunday.

Even broad agreement that there are some positive signs on the economic front, at least in emerging markets, was coupled with a warning from the head of the International Monetary Fund. "Do not relax," Christine Lagarde said. There's still a "risk of relapse."

More than 2,500 of the best and brightest in business, government, academia and civic life gathered for the five-day World Economic Forum at this Alpine resort. But much of the overt glitz and glamor that is a usual feature was toned down or absent this year, a decision founder Klaus Schwab said reflected the serious issues facing the world.

Political and economic issues vie for top billing each year at Davos, and this time, the economy had the edge, with a special focus on how to promote economic growth and jobs, especially for the youth among the world's 220 million jobless.

The IMF said that China, Africa, and other emerging markets could see significant growth, but Japan, eurozone nations and the U.S. are likely to struggle with negative to low growth. Ahead of the 43rd forum, the IMF downgraded its forecast for global economic growth this year by one-tenth of a percentage point to 3.5 percent.

While the U.S. avoided the so-called "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases and spending cuts, and fears have abated that the euro currency union will break up, there is growing concern that governments may ease up on measures to improve growth and reduce debt that the IMF and many other institutions are calling for.

IMF chief Lagarde said the "very fragile and timid recovery" depends on leaders in the 17-nation eurozone, the United States and Japan making "the right decisions." The eurozone in particular "is fragile because it is prone to political crisis" and slow decision-making, she said.

Davos participants' uneasiness about the world economy was matched by growing concern over the political turmoil in the Arab world, terrorism in North Africa, a spate of natural disasters that have highlighted the failure to tackle climate change, and the growing inequality between the world's "haves" and "have nots."

"Two years ago, gloom around the stalled economic recovery was leavened by euphoria at the outbreak of the Arab spring," Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, told The Associated Press at Saturday night's low-key final reception. "This year, relief at the improved economic outlook is tempered by despair at the unimpeded slaughter in Syria, uncertainty about the outlook in Egypt, and frustration over the Arab monarchies' resistance to reform."

The Arab Spring uprisings have ousted dictators in Tunisia, Yemen, Libya and Egypt over the past two years. But now Islamists and liberals are wrangling over power, with Islamists mainly gaining the upper hand. Democracy is far from certain, and economic woes have left hundreds of thousands of young people jobless and frustrated that their "revolutions" haven't produced any dividends.

Former Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa, a losing candidate in Egypt's presidential election last year, said there have been achievements, but warned that democracy isn't only about casting a vote.

"It is the respect of human rights, for rights of women, separation of powers, independence of the judiciary. This meaning of democracy we have not yet achieved," Moussa said.

Elsewhere in the Middle East, Israeli-Palestinian peace talks remain stalled, Arab monarchs remain entrenched, and the death toll from the escalating civil war in Syria has topped 60,000 with no end in sight.

Jordan's King Abdullah II, whose country is hosting almost 300,000 Syrian refugees, predicted that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime will last at least another six months. He called for a transition plan involving all Syrians and the Syrian army.

He also urged stepped up international support to end the Syrian crisis, saying, "The weakest refugees are struggling now just to survive this year's harsh winter."

Abdullah told the forum that "unprecedented threats to regional and global stability and security" need international action now, not the "wait and see" response by some countries ? which he did not identify ? especially in helping governments emerge politically and financially from the Arab uprisings.

The king, considered one of the region's moderate leaders, also warned Israel to stop playing the "waiting game," and said President Barack Obama's second term offered the last opportunity to create two states ? Palestine and Israel ? that can live side-by-side in peace.

Angel Gurria, secretary-general of the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, said the focus on resolving the world's economic crisis has distracted leaders from many other important issues, including education, the social consequences of unemployment and promoting ways to deal with climate change.

Nonetheless, Gurria said, the world should be "very worried" because there aren't many "tools" left to fix the economy if things get worse.

Trevor Manuel, South Africa's National Planning Commission minister, told AP that the key message from Davos for him was a positive one ? that "many of the decisions that have been taken bring us closer to where we need to be." He warned that "a sense of an all-pervasive gloom ... frequently becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Bank of Italy board meets to assess Monte Paschi crisis

ROME (Reuters) - The four-member board of the Bank of Italy was meeting on Saturday to consider the position of scandal-hit bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena and decide whether to authorize its request for 3.9 billion euros ($5.3 billion) of state loans.

Italy's third-largest bank this week revealed loss-making derivatives trades that could cost it about 720 million euros, causing heavy losses in its shares and prompting questions about how the risky deals could have been hidden from regulators.

This issue has shot to the centre of the campaign for next month's national election and politicians have blamed the Bank of Italy, which was led by current European Central Bank president Mario Draghi at the time of the deals, for failing to spot the problem.

At Saturday's meeting chaired by current Bank of Italy (BOI)Governor Ignazio Visco, the board will consider whether Monte Paschi meets the requirements of current and future stability necessary to receive the state loans it has requested.

Visco told reporters on Friday that "there is no question that the bank is stable."

The meeting began on Saturday morning, a BOI spokeswoman said, and the central bank is expected to issue a statement when it ends.

At a stormy meeting in Monte Paschi's Tuscan headquarters of Siena on Friday, its shareholders approved two capital increases of up to 6.5 billion euros to be carried out if needed in the next five years, which are a condition of the state bailout.

Outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti said late on Friday he considered it a "remote hypothesis" that the bank would end up needing to be nationalized.

Visco attended the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday where he gave a spate of interviews to try to deflect accusations that the BOI had not done its job properly.

"It is wrong to insinuate that there was a lack of supervision by the Bank of Italy," he told CNBC television, adding that his institution had nothing to hide and would cooperate with prosecutors probing the Tuscan lender.

Draghi also delivered a speech in Davos but took no questions from reporters.

Visco's task was made more difficult by a report in the Corriere della Sera daily on Friday which included excerpts of a document drafted by six BOI inspectors expressing concerns over the two main trades under scrutiny as long ago as 2010.

That report would have been sent to the BOI's head of bank supervision at the time, Anna Maria Tarantola, who has since left the bank to become president of state broadcaster RAI.

In Davos, Visco sidestepped questions about whether Draghi knew about the derivatives trades, which were conducted between 2006 and 2009 and involved Japanese bank Nomura and Deutsche Bank .

Internal auditors at Monte Paschi already detected anomalies at the bank's finance department responsible for derivative operations three years ago, daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Saturday, quoting parts of the audit dated November 26, 2009.

However, the outcome of the audit was "partially favorable" for the Siena-based bank, contrasting with "partially unfavorable" rating given by Bank of Italy inspectors led by Vincenzo Cantarella at the end of an inspection from May-August 2010.

Press reports on Saturday suggest the scandal around Monte Paschi is widening. Corriere della Sera said prosecutors are investigating a large number of derivatives contracts and suspect possible accounting fraud and corruption. ($1 = 0.7421 euros)

Classmates give after fire destroys Littlestown family's home ...

Giana Hoddinott, center, is surrounded by her third-grade classmates wearing Baltimore Ravens colors for $1 dress-down Friday at Annunciation BVM School in McSherrystown. (THE EVENING SUN TYLER SIZEMORE)

Imagine being 8 years old on Christmas morning.

You wake up to brand new toys and clothes that Santa left under the tree. The excitement of the day is overwhelming.

Now imagine being 8 years old, and losing everything in a house fire nearly two weeks after the holidays.

That happened to 8-year-old Giana Hoddinott and her family Jan. 5, after an suspected wiring problem in the bathroom wall left their Littlestown home a complete loss.

"Everyone is coping well with the situation," said Angela Hoddinott, Giana's mother. "We're lucky to be able to stay with my in-laws during this time. I'd say the biggest grievance right now is the loss of our pets."

But, Lucky, a cat, and Jack, a dog, died in the fire, and they were a big part of the family, Hoddinott said. The family lost most of its other possessions, as well, including trophies, pictures, medals and diplomas.

"You name it, it's gone," Hoddinott said.

But every now and then, a light shines through the tragedy.

Giana had no idea what was in store for her Friday when she arrived at school.

As a third-grader at Annunciation Blessed Virgin Mary School in McSherrystown, she was just getting ready to go to lunch with the rest of her classmates.

But before lunch dismissal, students in Kim Lamur's class had a surprise waiting. Because of the recent fire at Hoddinotts' home, the students decided to surprise Giana by giving her "Christmas" presents to take home in an effort to help replace

what was lost.

"I feel really good about it," Giana said. "I'm glad they are helping us. I thank them for all of their support."

As an added surprise, the school collected donations through three dress-down Fridays. To honor the Hoddinotts' favorite team, the Baltimore Ravens, students were given a chance to donate a $1 to wear black and purple, or their favorite Ravens clothing.

"It was so nice to see the kids put aside their football rivalries to dress in black and purple," said Christy Lucas, Annunciation BVM principal. "There is a strong sense of community here."

In all, $2,250.25 was raised for the family, far exceeding the expected $600.

"This is so unbelievable," said Angela Hoddinott said through tears. "All the love and support has definitely been getting us through this. It's all very overwhelming."

Hoddinott said she's been able to take her mind off of the catastrophe by spending time at the school, where she works running the cafeteria and volunteers as athletic director and a member on several committees.

She said the Hoddinotts are extremely thankful for all the help they have received, and continue to heal while putting their lives back in order.

"It's amazing how people come together

during a tragedy," she said. "The goodness shines as bright as the day. I'm truly blessed."

As the days go on, the family still faces a few daily difficulties.

"It's going to be a huge sadness to see the house get knocked down," Angela said. "It's hard to cope with the loss of our pets. There's also the challenge of closing a chapter, watching it disappear and starting a new one. That house was more than a house - it was our home."

Despite the challenges the fire has caused for Giana and her family, one evident hurdle remains - making sure the Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Giana definitely thinks the Ravens will win.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Venezuela's government says President Hugo Chavez has begun additional treatment after he bounced back from complications following cancer surgery in Cuba more than six weeks ago.

Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said on the sidelines of a summit meeting in Chile that when Chavez underwent surgery on Dec. 11, a "malignant lesion" with severe complications was removed from the pelvis.

Villegas said that Chavez has overcome a severe respiratory infection that set in after the surgery, although he still has "a certain degree of respiratory insufficiency" and is being treated for that.

Villegas said for the first time that doctors have begun to apply, in his words, "systemic medical treatment" for his illness. He didn't give details.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's condition has improved and he is now optimistic as he faces more treatment following cancer surgery, his vice president said Saturday.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro said after meeting with Chavez in Cuba that the ailing president is now "in the best moment we've seen him in these days of struggle" following his Dec. 11 cancer surgery. Chavez hasn't appeared or spoken publicly since before the operation, and his government has said he suffered complications including a severe respiratory infection but has recently been improving.

Maduro spoke on state television early Saturday after returning from Havana to Venezuela. He said he was leaving shortly for a summit meeting in Chile with a written message from Chavez.

"We're taking a message prepared by the president, and we're going to turn it over to heads of state who attend the CELAC summit. He makes fundamental proposals," Maduro said, adding that the message was in Chavez's handwriting.

Maduro said Chavez also sent a message for Venezuelans, including that he was "very optimistic" about his treatment. Maduro said Chavez is "hanging on to Christ and to life."

Maduro said Chavez also urged his supporters in Venezuela to be alert about opponents seeking to do harm to his socialist-oriented "revolution." However, Maduro didn't elaborate.

The vice president, whom Chavez designated as his successor before the operation, spoke on television surrounded by officials including Defense Minister Diego Molero and Information Minister Ernesto Villegas. Maduro said Villegas would give a more detailed update on Chavez's health later Saturday.

Chavez has undergone repeated surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment for an unspecified type of pelvic cancer. He has undergone much of his treatment in Cuba.

The 58-year-old president won re-election in October, and lawmakers indefinitely put off his inauguration earlier this month in a decision that was condemned by opponents but upheld by the Supreme Court.

The vice president said that Chavez "has reviewed and evaluated reports on different areas and has made decisions."

He said Chavez evaluated the country's economic situation and budget and made decisions about gold reserves, funding for public housing projects and "social investments and economic development." Maduro didn't give more details but said the actions approved by the president were intended to "guarantee the country's economic growth, infrastructure, housing."

Maduro said that one of the documents signed by Chavez dealt with the selection of his socialist party's candidates for mayoral elections later this year. The vice president showed the signature in red ink on one of the documents.

Indian women given kitchen knives, chili to fend off rapists

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's radical Hindu nationalist party governing Mumbai has handed out kitchen knives and chili powder to women following a gang rape in the capital New Delhi that ignited a national debate on the best way to tackle sex crimes.

The Shiv Sena party, an ally of the main opposition BJP, said it had handed out 21,000 knives with three-inch blades to women in the city and surrounding areas and plans to distribute 100,000.

Mumbai police said they were examining the knives and considering legal action.

"This is a symbolic gesture," said Shiv Sena spokesman Rahul Narvekar, adding that a knife shorter than six inches in length does not fit the definition of a weapon. The party also handed out small bags of chili powder - apparently to throw into an attacker's eyes.

"It's only to pass a signal to eve-teasers, anti-social elements and perpetrators of crime against women that women are empowered and they can take care of themselves," Narvekar said.

Eve-teasing is a euphemism for molesting women.

"Don't be afraid of using this knife if someone attacks you," Ajay Chaudhari, running the knife campaign, was quoted by the party newspaper, Saamana, as saying.

"We have set up a team of nine advocates to protect you from any potential court cases that may arise."

A 23-year-old physiotherapy student was raped and beaten on a moving bus in on December 16 before being thrown bleeding on a expressway in New Delhi, dubbed India's "rape capital". Mumbai is generally considered a safer city for women.

The attack and the student's death two weeks later caused public outrage at the failure of the government and police to protect women from rising sexual offences in a country where one rape is reported on average every 20 minutes.

In response, more women are taking up self-defense classes and carrying pepper spray. A government commission set up to recommend revisions to India's sex crime laws this week said women who kill an attacker during a attempted rape should be able to plead self-defense.

Crystal Cruises entices bookings through brand ... - Luxury Daily

Crystal Symphony

Crystal Cruises is eyeing affluent travelers by offering exclusive Mediterranean excursions on its spring itineraries that cannot be accessed through other travel brands.

The cruise line?s new collection of experiences called ?Boutique Adventures? will be available this spring for groups ranging from one to 15 travelers on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity ships sailing to the Mediterranean. Guests will have exclusive access to estates, art studios, museums, castles and businesses.

?Our guests are looking for different ways to experience destinations and they relish insider access,? said Mimi Weisband, vice president of public relations at?Crystal Cruises, Los Angeles. ?We are continually challenging our tour operators to seek out the unusual, experiential, intimate, cultural adventures.

?Our guests do not want a mass-market excursion ? they will pay more for something if it is unique and authentic,? she said.

Cruising the Mediterranean
There are seven Boutique Adventures that guests can choose. The cost ranges from $223 to more than $1,000 per guest.

Travelers can book the excursions online up to six months before their cruise.

The Florence excursion comprises a viewing of the Uffizi Gallery?s private Contini Bonacossi Collection, which is not accessible to the public.

In Funchal, Portugal, guests will have lunch with a local celebrity at Reid?s Palace or visit a family-run Madeiran winery where they will dine with the owners.

During the Rome experience, guests will make their own jewelry with instruction from a former Valentino model who now designs jewelry.

The Corfu, Greece, excursion consists of a painting lesson from the president of the Corfu Painters Society.

In Italy?s Vetriano, guests will attend the opera at Teatro Concordia, the?smallest public theater in the world.

Teatro Concordia

Excursions in Sorrento and Taormina, Italy, comprise?cooking lessons and meals with local, Michelin-star chefs.

In Taormina in Italy?s Sicily region, travelers will be served a meal while watching a classical concert at a Sicilian castle.

Crystal Cruises will promote the Boutique Adventures via its Web site, quarterly magazine and the on-board Shore Excursion team, per Ms. Weisband.

In addition, travel agents will also inform their clients about the experiences.

?The cruise industry has been becoming more aware of the large portion of the affluent travelers who shy away from cruises due to many misconceptions and overall lack of desire to be on-board the mega-ships,? said D.M. Banks, director at?DMB Public Relations, New York.

?Crystal Cruises is always looking at ways to provide the luxuries of cruises, while providing a boutique experience for their guests,? he said. ?This is another example of them thinking outside of the box to truly connect with their guests.

?Affluent travelers are more than happy to pay a premium for superior services and, more importantly, unique and personalized experiences. These intimate and semi-private excursions are great ways for guest to feel more immersed into the culture and destinations while at port.?

Story time
The new Boutique Adventures are meant to align with Crystal Cruises? ?Begin a New Story? ad campaign that launched last year, per Ms. Weisband.

The cruise line rebranded itself during the second quarter of 2012 through an all-encompassing campaign that centers on the notion of the travel journal and encourages consumers to share memories from past cruises.

The marketing efforts focus on cruise destinations and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, rather than the amenities of the ship.

Begin a New Story uses multiple channels including print ads with digital watermark technology, brochures, online banner ads, email, video and a smartphone app.

For instance, print ads appear in Cond? Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, Town & Country, Travel & Leisure, Coastal Living, Elle D?cor, Food & Wine and Forbes Life.

Consumers can scan the ads with their smartphones to reveal a 60-second video that shows three travelers? experiences in select Crystal Cruises? destinations through watercolor animation.

The brand asked eight watercolor artists to create images that are used in all aspects of the campaign (see story).

?The trend for affluent consumers is more intimate and incredibly special ? both of which are key to these excursions,? Ms. Weisband said.

?Entering someone?s home, sharing a meal with them and just a few other guests, and being able to hear in-depth stories of living and working in that area from your host ? these are experiences that can be deeply personal, bonding and memorable, really expanding one?s understanding of a culture far beyond any info gleaned from merely sight-seeing,? she said.

?Affluent consumers crave such experiences that go beyond the norm, as so many of them travel at a level well above the basics.?

Best forum browsing app for iPhone and iPad

Best forum browsing app for iPhone and iPad

Forums and discussion groups have always been one of the best parts of the web. Even in the early days of USENET, CompuServe, and AOL, they were places for like-minded people to get together, help each other, and talk about the things that mattered to them. Now, as the web has matured and technology has improved, they've gotten even better, and much more mobile. Look no further than our own iMore forums. And just like almost every other category of web service, with the advent of the iPhone and iPad, forums have gone to apps. But which is the best forums app?

We took a look at all the forum apps we could find and Tapatalk 2 for iPhone and Tapatalk HD for iPad by Quoord Systems are the best around when it comes to hooking into forums from any iOS device. Here's why...

User interface & design

Tapatalk 2 and Tapatalk HD are two separate apps but function in very much the same way. Even so, some of the user interface elements are a little different. Because of that, we'll take a look at both separately.

First we will take a look at Tapatalk 2 for iPhone which is an update to the original Tapatalk app. Upon launching Tapatalk 2 you'll be presented with the Explore section. Here you can browse through a huge collection of forums. If you already know what forum you'd like to add you can simply search for it in the top search bar.

The menu system in Tapatalk 2 is controlled vertically instead of the common horizontal bottom menu. You can slide to the right on any menu bar to return the screen before that. If you're on a top menu tapping the menu button in the top left or sliding to the right will reveal the main menu.

The main menu in Tapatalk 2 consists of four main options; Explore, Accounts, History, and Settings. The Explore tab simply lets you browse through tons of forums that are compatible with Tapatalk as well as search for ones you're already a member of. The next tab down is the Accounts tab. This tab will aggregate all the forums you have connected in one place. At the very top, you'll see your Tapatalk ID info if you're using one. We'll talk more about the function of a Tapatalk and what it does a little later. Tapping on any of the forums listed in the Accounts tab will immediately launch that forum for you.

The History tab does exactly what you'd expect it to do. It'll show you exactly where you've been and give you an easy way to get back there. As far as the Settings tab is concerned, there isn't too much going on but there doesn't need to be. You can edit push notification settings, choose browser settings, and change basic posting and reading setting such as font size, how many posts per page, and a few other options.

As far as actually interacting with forums, you use the same vertical navigation technique you do on the main menus of the forums. Some navigation may be slightly different from forum to forum depending on how that particular community has implemented and developed their forums. For the most part, the user experience seems about the same. From the main Accounts menu, tap on the forum community you'd like to browse. Here you'll get a drop down menu that lets you choose what section you'd like to browse. These options include unread, participated, timeline, subscribed, main forum list, search, people, and messages. Tapping any one of them will launch the corresponding section.

Reading forum posts is pleasant and posting responses is painless. If you know how to respond to text messages or compose a tweet, you'll instantly know how to navigate around Tapatalk 2 on your iPhone.

Now we move on to Tapatalk HD for iPad which is built specifically to take advantage of the larger screen on the iPad. While many of the features stay similar to Tapatalk 2 on the iPhone, there are a few key differences.

Upon launching Tapatalk HD for iPad you'll be taken to the Home menu. Here you'll be able to log in to your Tapatalk account if you have one. On the left you'll see a navigation menu that allows you to browse and explore different forum communities. On the top is a static search bar that you can search for forum communities you already belong to by name. To the right you'll see a list of your forum accounts you have linked with Tapatalk HD. Tapping on any one of them will instantly launch that community's forum boards.

Once you're inside a forum you'll now notice that the menu system switching to a lower navigation setup. While the options may differ slightly from forum to forum, for the most part you'll have tabs for gallery, topics, messages, people, search, and browser. If you have moderation powers, you may also see a moderation tab as well.

Tapping into any one of the sections launches it. While browsing forums you'll be shown sub forums trees that you can dig down through and backtrack as you want. The biggest difference between the iPhone and iPad versions of Tapatalk is the gallery section on the iPad. If the forum supports it, here you'll see a collective gallery of all the images that users are uploading. This is a really nice feature and something I could spend hours going through. It's also an interesting way to find threads you may or may not have discovered otherwise. I've also used it as a good moderating tool. If you don't want nudity or inappropriate images in your forums, it can be hard to weed them out. Tapatalk HD on the iPad makes it simple to view images all in one go.

The current version of Tapatalk HD for iPad also has quite a few moderation tools that aren't present in Tapatalk 2 on the iPhone (yet). The older version of Tapatalk seemed to have more moderation options than the new version so here's to hoping they replace those in an update.

All in all, both Tapatalk 2 and Tapatalk HD are very similar in feature set and interface. If you use one, you can immediately pick the other up and feel right at home.

Forum support

The Tapatalk family of apps supports a wide selection of forum communities and boards. As per the app description, over 40,000 different communities can be added and interacted with via any of the Tapatalk apps.

What really matters is whether or not the forum you use is compatible with Tapatalk. In my experience, almost everything I've searched for inside Tapatalk 2 or Tapatalk HD has popped right up and loaded with no issues. An easy way to tell if the forum you browse supports Tapatalk is to ask before buying. Many users may also notice that forum users' signatures sometimes say they are posting from Tapatalk. If you see that, you know that board is supported.

I found the selection Tapatalk offers and the support for it by communities to be huge. The Explore section of both apps gives you a super easy way to find message boards and communities that interest you. I've even found a few that I probably wouldn't have come across on my own via an actual web browser. In that aspect, it's much better than all the others that just let you hook into what you already know.

Viewing and posting to forum boards

The most important part of a forum app is posting and viewing. Tapatalk 2 and Tapatalk HD for iPad both excel beyond their competitors in this arena. Not only can you post basic messages to boards, you can do so much more.

To compose a message in Tapatalk, you can do one of two things. If you're inside a thread and you'd like to create a general post to that thread, tapping the compose button in the upper right hand corner of either app will bring you to a compose screen. If you want to reply to an existing post, just tap on it and submenu will pop up. From here you can click the reply button.

There are also many other ways you can interact with forum posts. You can like or thank a post if forums support that functionality. You can also share a post via email, text message, Twitter, Facebook, or copy it to the clipboard to share elsewhere. If you moderate a forum, you'll also be able to edit posts by tapping on them and choosing more options.

Editing posts is pretty much the extent of what you can moderate on the new version of Tapatalk 2 for iPhone but Tapatalk HD for iPad takes it even further. Tapping on a post in Tapatalk HD for iPad will bring up a submenu. If you're a moderator to that community you'll see a moderate option. Tapping on it will bring up another submenu with options to edit, delete, move, or unapprove the post. You'll also have the option to ban the user altogether. If you enjoy browsing forums from your iPad but find moderating to be an issue, Tapatalk HD for iPad will solve a lot of those pains.

When creating a new post or thread, outside of the obvious options for making a title and typing text, you have options to upload images and links. As long as your forum supports image uploads, you can upload images directly to the forum. If it doesn't, Tapatalk also offers their own native image upload service and will host the image for you. The older versions of Tapatalk used to charge extra to take advantage of image hosting but both Tapatalk 2 and Tapatalk HD for iPad include this feature at no additional charge.

Overall, Tapatalk provides a much better posting and reading experience than other forum apps such as Forum Runner. Posts are easy to navigate through and manage while posting and contributing is even easier.

Push notifications & syncing

Tapatalk 2 for iPhone offers push notifications that you can turn on and off as you see fit. Currently, you can turn them on and off on a per account basis. Per forum you can also dictate which types of notifications you'd like to receive. Currently the only two options are for private messages and subscribed topics. It'd be nice to see more options for customization in a later update but for the majority of users, this will be enough.

When it comes to Tapatalk HD for iPad, there is no native push. We are hoping this is something they'll bring to iPad soon. It also doesn't make a lot of sense to us that the old universal version of Tapatalk for iPhone and iPad supported push but the updated Tapatalk HD does not. It's a better app in every single way but where notifications are concerned.

As far as syncing goes, Tapatalk does offer Tapatalk ID which essentially lets you create a unique login with their own native service that keeps track of all your forums and communities. What this means is that if you already have Tapatalk configured on your iPhone and decide to buy the iPad version later or have to restore for some reason, you won't have to hunt for all your communities again. They'll automatically be restored as soon as you sign into your Tapatalk ID. Your user name will be stores but you'll have to re-enter the passwords to your forum logins the first time you launch them for security reasons.

Even though Tapatalk HD for iPad doesn't offer push notifications (yet), the notifications within Tapatalk 2 for iPhone are ridiculously fast. Plus, if you really want push notifications on your iPad, the second best option is the original Tapatalk forum app which is a universal binary for both iPhone and iPad. With this version, you will receive push notifications if you choose to. You'll just be compromising a little interface wise since the older version of Tapatalk doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Tapatalk HD for iPad has.

Pricing

Tapatalk 2 for iPhone is currently priced at $3.99 in the App Store and is worth every penny in our opinion. If you're a frequent forum lurker and need the ability to get to posts quickly and reply to them with ease, Tapatalk 2 is where it's at.

The iPad version, Tapatalk HD, will run you $4.99 which may seem steep to some users, especially considering the lack of push. In this case, it really will come down to choice. If you prefer the updated interface of Tapatalk HD (which we do), push is something you'll have to forego (for now). If you really want push, you also have the option of buying the original Tapatalk app that's a universal download for both iPhone and iPad. That'll run you $2.99 and you'll have the option to use it on either device. You'll just have to pay an additional fee for native image upload, but only if you need it.

The bottom line

When apps for iPhone and iPad are concerned, Tapatalk has a lock on the category. Lots of communities support it and most members are aware of it. Tapatalk 2 for iPhone is their best app yet and Tapatalk 2 HD for iPad still beats all the other guys.

If you don't want to purchase two separate apps, you can also spring for the older version of Tapatalk that's a universal binary for both iPhone and iPad at a cheaper price. That's what is so great about Tapatalk's line of products, there's a solution for everyone. And when it comes to great forum apps, look no further than one of Tapatalk's products.

Note: If you just want access to iMore and Mobile Nations, you can get free, dedicated versions of Tapatalk that work just on our sites. - Rene

Glenn Grothman, Wisconsin Politician, Makes Racially Charged Claim Against Planned Parenthood

A controversial Republican legislator, infamous for his extreme anti-abortion views, is again making headlines after an interview on a conservative Christian talk show.

Glenn Grothman, a state senator from Wisconsin, told Jim Schneider of "Voice of Christian Youth America" that Planned Parenthood is "the most racist organization? in the nation and has a tradition of "not liking people who are not white." He also charged that the non-profit health services group aggressively targets the Asian-American community for "sex-selective abortions," a practice that Planned Parenthood has repeatedly condemned.

"Gender bias is contrary to everything our organization works for daily in communities across the country. Planned Parenthood opposes racism and sexism in all forms, and we work to advance equity and human rights in the delivery of health care," the organization wrote in a press release. "Planned Parenthood condemns sex selection motivated by gender bias, and urges leaders to challenge the underlying conditions that lead to these beliefs and practices, including addressing the social, legal, economic, and political conditions that promote gender bias and lead some to value one gender over the other."

In his interview, Grothman also cited as evidence "the historic comments" of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood. Grothman implies, as have others in the past, the founder was a racist. Yet Salon notes that in 1966, civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of "a striking kinship between our movement and Margaret Sanger?s early efforts."

Grothman, an aggressive anti-abortion crusader and proponent of the nuclear family in Wisconsin, has made no secret of his often controversial opinions in the past. In March, he drew widespread criticism after a proposing a bill that would have classified single parenthood a contributing factor to child abuse.

He has also said that unwanted pregnancies are the fault of the mothers, and that many mothers lie about the circumstances of their pregnancies. "I think a lot of women are adopting the single motherhood lifestyle because the government creates a situation in which it is almost preferred," he said, according to Right Wing Watch.

Berezovsky battles in court with ex-partner over assets

LONDON (Reuters) - Exiled Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky's ex-partner, with whom he has two children, is pursuing him in court for a share of his assets, adding to financial pressures on him months after he lost a $6 billion dispute with rival Roman Abramovich.

A High Court judgment published late on Wednesday modified an earlier ruling granting Yelena Gorbunova's request that up to 200 million pounds ($317 million) of Berezovsky's assets be frozen, and said only those at risk could be restricted.

Berezovsky was saddled with over $100 million in legal costs when his protracted battle against Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, ended in defeat last August.

The oligarch had tried to keep the proceedings between himself and Gorbunova confidential. Some hearings took place last week behind closed doors, but the latest judgment on the asset freeze was published on an online database after complaints from journalists.

"On the evidence, Mr Berezovsky is a man under financial pressure. It is likely that he will feel a more pressing need to satisfy creditors than satisfy Ms Gorbunova," judge George Mann wrote in his judgment.

Berezovsky, who lives in self-imposed exile in London, did not respond to a Reuters request for a comment.

In her application for the asset freeze order, Gorbunova said Berezovsky had promised that, when he sold his 25-million-pound Wentworth Park country estate, she would receive 5 million pounds from the proceeds.

Instead, when the estate near London was sold last year, the money went to his creditors and she saw none of it.

She also said Berezovsky had told her she was the owner of two French properties which he was now in the process of selling, and she was concerned she would not receive anything from those sales because he needed the money for himself.

Berezovsky's application to have the freeze on his assets lifted was heard by judge Mann in the High Court last week.

His lawyers argued that Gorbunova's application for the asset freeze had not followed the correct procedures and that the scale of the freeze was excessive.

"PRESSING NEED"

Mann's judgment that only the assets at risk, namely the French properties, should be frozen, means Berezovsky will not be able to sell them and dispose of the proceeds until his dispute with Gorbunova is resolved.

The judgment did not put a figure on the value of the properties.

Regarding the Wentworth Park sale, Mann wrote that if Gorbunova was right and "the 5-million-pound bird has already flown", then there were no funds on which any injunction could bite.

Noting the French properties were held through "obscure offshore structures", he said there was a risk Berezovsky could manipulate matters to deprive Gorbunova of what she said she was entitled to.

The judge also made reference to Berezovsky's "propensity to go so far as giving dishonest evidence in pursuit of a claim against another in the Abramovich proceedings".

This was a reference to judge Elizabeth Gloster's ruling last year in the Berezovsky-Abramovich case, when she said Berezovsky was an "unimpressive and inherently unreliable witness".

Mann stressed that he made no judgment about the substance of Gorbunova's assertions about the assets and the promises she said Berezovsky had made, or the evidence she had put forward.

"That evidence has not yet been tested, and it is to be anticipated that Mr Berezovsky will vigorously contest the claim, dispute a lot of the evidence and advance evidence of his own," the judge wrote.
