What financial reports reveal about TV networks

Companies with television networks have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. It generally covers the April-June period, though some companies have fiscal quarters that depart from that.

Here's a look at reports for selected television network companies:

? July 31: Discovery Communications Inc., owner of pay TV channels including Discovery, TLC and Animal Planet, says second-quarter net income rose 15 percent on rising ad sales, subscription fees and subscribers. Audiences increased and costs declined at the company's joint venture, the Oprah Winfrey Network. The company says the struggling channel remains on track to be profitable in the second half of next year.

? Aug. 1: Time Warner Inc. says revenue at its television networks grew 4 percent to $3.6 billion, in part from higher rates paid by cable and satellite TV companies to carry CNN, TBS and other channels. Time Warner also saw growth in HBO subscribers and benefited from higher ad rates and an increase in the number of NBA games shown on its channels. But ad revenue fell at its domestic news networks.

Comcast Corp. says profits fell at the cable networks, which include Bravo, MSNBC and CNBC, as expenses to produce and acquire programs grew. The company says NBC is doing better than expected with the London Olympics and no longer believes it will take a big loss.

? Aug. 2: CBS Corp. says net income rose 8 percent, beating analysts' expectations, even as advertising revenue fell and it took in less money from the sale of program reruns.

Scripps Networks Interactive Inc., the operator of pay TV networks such as Food Network and HGTV, says net income grew 84 percent thanks to higher revenue from advertising and distributor fees.

? Aug. 3: Viacom Inc. says revenue fell 5 percent at its TV networks as U.S. advertising fell 7 percent. Viacom has been struggling with a ratings decline for key channels, particularly Nickelodeon. It says it's investing aggressively to create new hits. TV accounts for two-thirds of Viacom's overall revenue and nearly all of the profits. Viacom also owns MTV and Comedy Central.

? Aug. 7: The Walt Disney Co. says revenue from TV businesses such as ESPN and ABC rose 3 percent to $5.08 billion. Ad revenue at ESPN rose in the "mid-teen" percentages thanks to higher prices, sales volume and bigger audiences.

? Aug. 8: News Corp. says revenue from its cable TV networks rose 15 percent to $2.48 billion, while broadcast TV revenue fell 3 percent to $1.08 billion in the latest quarter.

? Aug. 9: AMC Networks Inc. says second-quarter earnings rose 53 percent, largely in line with analysts' estimates, but it predicts a big drag in the third quarter if its dispute with satellite TV company Dish Network Corp. continues to leave its channels off the service. The company said that 13 percent of its subscriber base was affected by the blackout on Dish, which has continued since July 1.

Isaac moves north after drenching Gulf Coast, New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The Isaac weather system is expected to weaken further as it heads north on Thursday, having caused significant damage to the U.S. Gulf Coast but nothing on the scale of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

The former Category One hurricane is likely to become a tropical depression on Thursday, and move over southern Arkansas by early Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

As Isaac ebbs, post-mortems should show that an elaborate flood containment plan developed for low-lying New Orleans survived its first major test, seven years to the day after Katrina laid waste to large parts of the iconic city and killed more than 1,800 people.

And as the focus shifts from the coast, many further north will hope that Isaac brings rains desperately needed to ease a drought in the center of the United States, where summer crops have been ravaged and many rivers and dams are critically low.

The mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, said the $14.5 billion system built for New Orleans by the Army Corps of Engineers -- an array of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps -- had performed "exactly as it should."

Isaac was never close to packing the punch of Katrina, which was a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale when it smashed into New Orleans on August 29, 2005 - a day that still reverberates in the nation's psyche.

And early indications are that property damage from Isaac will not crack the top-10 list of worst U.S. hurricanes by inflation-adjusted losses.

But the storm still produced major headaches, especially the seemingly endless rain that caught many long-time residents by surprise, trapped some on rooftops, and caused significant flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

SLOW MOVING

Isaac's advance slowed to a crawl after it first grazed the southeast Louisiana coast on Tuesday. That slowdown allowed it to pick up strength and dump rain for many more hours than expected. Flooding and storm surges forced thousands from their homes in areas not far from New Orleans.

"There is no such thing as 'just' a tropical storm," Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said after Isaac was downgraded from Hurricane strength on Wednesday.

Fugate's boss, U.S. President Barack Obama, declared the impact on Louisiana and Mississippi major disasters and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

The NHC estimated total rainfall amounts from Isaac of 7 to 14 inches, enough for widespread lowland flooding. Isolated maximum amounts over much of Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, Alabama and even Arkansas were expected to be as much as 25 inches.

Storm surges at high tide were also as high as 12 feet on the coast of Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana. Thousands were evacuated from St. John the Baptist Parish, north of New Orleans, after surges in Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

New Orleans was provided with a heavy security presence to prevent any repeat of the days-long crime wave and general chaos that followed Katrina.

Police and National Guard units, many armed with assault rifles, patrolled dark and nearly deserted streets in downtown New Orleans, usually a hotbed of tourism.

The city was still being lashed by rain and high winds on Wednesday night and about 60 percent of all homes and businesses were without power.

GHOST TOWN

"It's a ghost town," said Sgt. Joseph Jennings, a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard patrolling the streets in an armored humvee.

"Everybody saw the widespread looting during Katrina and nobody wants that to happen again."

The darkness of the Lower Ninth Ward was eerily reminiscent of Katrina, when a nearby levee failed and the largely poor and black neighborhood was inundated by deadly floodwaters.

In the nearby Seventh Ward, one of the city's poorest and most crime-ridden areas, residents could be seen in shadows on porches, standing outside their darkened homes.

Earlier, along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Donalyn Lott watched a pumping station sucking water out of an overflowing drainage canal and into the lake.

"We're holding up pretty good ? no flooding," Lott said.

About 3,000 residents were forced from their homes in St. John the Baptist Parish, upriver from New Orleans, by flooding caused by storm surges.

Evacuations were also needed in Plaquemines Parish, a major shrimping area southeast of New Orleans that bore the brunt of the northward-moving storm.

Dozens were plucked from the roofs of their houses by local boatmen after earlier deciding they could ride out what compared with Katrina seemed like a small storm.

"This storm has delivered more of a punch than people thought," said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

More than 730,000 Louisiana and Mississippi customers of Entergy Corp and other local utilities were without power as of late Wednesday.

City officials also said Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which closed late Monday, would remain shut on Thursday as the lines that supply it with power were knocked out by the storm.

Benchmark crude oil prices slipped on Wednesday on expectations that damage to oil facilities, offshore and along the coast, would be limited. Major oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil Corp, began making plans to assess or restart operations.

Beneath Antarctic ice, a potent greenhouse gas?

A study published Wednesday suggests that the Antarctic Ice Sheet holds vast amounts of methane, which, if released during a thaw, could accelerate global warming.??

Large volumes of the greenhouse gas methane could have been produced under the Antarctic Ice Sheet over millions of years, which could add to global warming if released into the atmosphere by a thaw, a study said on Wednesday.

Scientists from the universities of Bristol, Utrecht, California and Alberta simulated the accumulation of methane in Antarctic sedimentary basins using models and calculations.

They found it was likely there were micro-organisms there that would have been able to convert the ice sheet's large deposits of organic carbon into the potent gas.

If present, methane would most likely be trapped under the ice.

But it could be released into the atmosphere as rising global temperatures melt the ice sheet, fuelling even more global warming, the scientists said in the paper published in the journal Nature.

"The Antarctic Ice Sheet could constitute a previously neglected component of the global methane hydrate inventory although significant uncertainty exists," the scientists said.

Methane stays in the atmosphere for up to 15 years. Levels have been on the rise over the past few years, following a period of stability since 1998.

The gas is normally trapped as "methane hydrate" in sediments under a seabed. Methane hydrate is a form of water ice containing a large amount of methane which is usually stable.

As temperatures rise, the hydrate breaks down and methane is released from the sea bed, mostly dissolving into the seawater.

But if trapped methane broke sea surfaces and escaped into the atmosphere, it would intensify global warming.

Scientists have already identified thousands of sites in the Arctic where methane is bubbling into the atmosphere but the potential for methane formation under the Antarctic Ice Sheet has been less well studied.

Conditions under the Antarctic Ice Sheet seem capable of producing methane as the water is oxygen-depleted, hosts micro-organisms and contains significant reservoirs of organic carbon, Wednesday's study said.

"We calculate that the sub-Antarctic hydrate inventory could be of the same order of magnitude as that of recent estimates made for Arctic permafrost."

In 2008, American and Russian experts estimated that 0.5 megatonnes of methane are released per year and at least 1,400 gigatonnes of carbon is trapped as methane and methane hydrates under the Arctic permafrost.

But up to 50 gigatonnes of hydrate storage could be released at any time, which would increase the methane content of the Earth's atmosphere by a factor of 12, they warned.

Social Media Marketing ? What Size Should Your Pictures Be On ...

what size should facebook photos be?So this morning one of my Facebook friends asked, ?what size should pictures be on Facebook? which got me thinking, while I have a an incredibly affordable ebook out there about how to do photos for facebook ($3 bucks for goodness sake), some of you may not know WHY you need to take a peek at what you are posting and how it looks to the average bear!

First off, the answer is, we like to have photos that are 400 pixels wide by 400 pixels tall. The reason for this is that they look GREAT on Facebook, look great on Google Plus and look good on Pinterest boards (there is a little cropping but I am pretty okay with that!)

As you can see, if you just plop a link into the feed, you get a wimpy little photo that is almost invisible in the feed. It also makes for a pretty lame looking Timeline. Back up, rewind?the feed is where you see all of the different posts from all your friends and likes, your timeline is when they click the link on your name and then see everything YOU have posted since the dawn of time!

The second set is of a tiny picture that looks even worse in our estimation. It shows up wimpy in the feed AND has a bunch of grey area around it in your timeline. Please, please, please, make sure you know what size your pictures are that you are posting to facebook! (top tip..I use a browser tool called MeasureIt?just go to google and search for measure it for chrome or measure it for firefox and you can add it to your browser).

The last photo was a big beautiful 400 plus each way picture? a REALLY clear winner in the attention game!

So next time one of your friends asks, what size should your pictures be on Facebook, you can say?at least 400X400!

Las Cumbres Observatory spectrographs acquire target robotically

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Two identical FLOYDS spectrographs, installed in recent weeks at telescopes 6,000 miles apart, robotically acquired a supernovae target this week. Due to the level of precision required and the difficulty involved, few if any, other ground-based spectrographs have ever achieved this milestone.

"This is unprecedented," staff astronomer David Sand explained. "In a matter of just a few weeks, Las Cumbres Observatory was able to install the spectrographs, achieve first light, and begin robotic operations. It's unheard of." Sand is already gathering data from the spectrographs to support his research.

The FLOYDS spectrographs -- unique for their combination of design, capabilities, and level of automation -- were named after the band Pink Floyd, specifically for their album artwork on The Dark Side of the Moon, which shows a prism dispersing white light into the colors of the rainbow. Instead of sunlight, FLOYDS makes rainbows out of distant supernova explosions and gamma ray bursts to probe their chemical compositions and inner workings.

FLOYDS, installed on Faulkes Telescope North (FTN) at Haleakala Observatory and on Faulkes Telescope South (FTS) at Siding Spring Observatory, are some of the first spectrographs designed to acquire astronomical targets, observe them, and process the data without the aid of on-site astronomers. Observations that are currently rare, like studies of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts hours after their explosion, are expected to be made routine, since the telescopes can get on-target much more rapidly than they could if they were operated by people.

While robotic imaging telescopes are becoming increasingly common in astronomy, robotic spectrographs are rarely built for ground-based observatories. This is because the opening to a spectrograph is a narrow slit, and getting starlight to fall through the slit requires pointing the telescope to better than two-tenths of an arcsecond. This is a daunting proposition -- an arcsecond is equivalent to the width of a human hair as seen from 10 yards away.

Another unique feature of the spectrographs is their ability to observe the entire visible spectrum in a single exposure. "The FLOYDS spectrographs are sensitive to light over the entire range of visible colors," explained LCOGT Science Director, Tim Brown, "including some that cannot be seen by the human eye."

Most spectrographs require two exposures to see over such a wide range, but FLOYDS uses a clever trick to double the range it captures. Light entering the spectrograph strikes a diffraction grating, which splits the light out into a spectrum. But each diffraction angle is shared by two radiant frequencies. Most spectrographs, to achieve an unmuddied spectrum, filter out the higher or lower spectrum, leaving just half the range. FLOYDS adds a prism instead, simply offseting the location of the higher frequency spectrum to a different location on the digital camera, and capturing a much wider range of colors.

Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) has owned and operated FTN and FTS since 2005. To date, observing on these telescopes has been limited to imaging without spectroscopic capabilities. A team from LCOGT including lead mechanical engineer Matt Dubberley, astronomer David Sand, telescope technicians Mark Elphick and Mark Willis completed the installation of the spectrographs during June and July.

Finding New Things

Sand, who worked closely on the development and testing of the spectrographs, and who managed the installations, said "FLOYDS is the next step in understanding the physics behind time varying astrophysical events. We will be able to identify supernovae earlier than ever before, perhaps gaining insight into their explosion mechanisms. FLOYDS also allows us to monitor objects for months on end, something that is very difficult to arrange with non-robotic telescopes. Coupling robotic spectrographs into our telescope network gives astronomers a huge edge."

When supernovae and gamma-ray bursts occur, astronomers may have only minutes or hours to capture the fast-evolving details, such as observing the actual supernova shock breaking out of a red giant star. Such events have been seen only a handful of times, but these observations are critical in linking the explosions to the progenitor star, which cannot otherwise be seen. Previously, shock breakouts were only seen when the astronomers got lucky. The right observer had to be at the right telescope, at the right time, when a supernova close enough was discovered early.

But robotic spectrographs like FLOYDS can be programmed to automatically observe targets from a sky survey, and interrupt other telescope observations to get them. And by having two spectrographs on opposite sides of the globe, chances are improved that one of them will be in the dark and ready to observe in the hours immediately following a supernova explosion.

"Any time you get a new capability in astronomy, you find new things," says Andy Howell, leader of the supernova group at Las Cumbres Observatory. "This is my dream spectrograph. There's a whole universe of stuff out there we've barely glimpsed because of technological limitations. Not any more!"

Hiring A Criminal Defense Team ? Legal

It?s possible for even the wisest men in society to commit terrible acts. For such a reason, the law will be breathing down your neck. No matter your social standing in society, the law is heartless. There are examples where folk get implicated for some major cases like murder. You could be innocent, but if you do not have a proper defense team, you will end up locked behind bars. This is because worldwide there isn?t any perfect criminal justice system.

If you want to clear your name after you?ve been implicated in a criminal case, the easiest way is to use criminal defense. If you?ve been blamed with a crime, it is good to hire a criminal defense attorney.

A criminal defense lawyer will defend their customers in criminal trials or lawsuits. These individuals are conversant with the legal code of the state. They are going to apply the best legal methods to ensure you are not sentenced. They?re going to help you file a plea, or get a bond.

Another good reason why you must hire a defense lawyer is they will help you prepare affidavits and find witnesses. They will review the evidence repeatedly to make sure you get the justice you deserve. The defense attorney you hire will check all your information to help in clearing your name from the bad records.

Many people tend to fear hiring the services of a defense attorney due to the expense that comes with it. If you require the services of a solicitor, you should take it slow in order to search for a cheap lawyer. All you?ve got to do is compare the services of different law firms. If you take plenty of time to do the research, you?ll for sure get a solicitor that can provide you with quality services at an inexpensive cost.

Stephen Mays is the owner of The Mays Law Firm, a legal firm in Brevard County offering free consultations from their website for criminal defense and family law.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Tips On How To Improve Your ...

Money is something you have to deal with for the rest of your life. The best way to manage your finances is to educate yourself and take control. This article will help you gain insight into how money works.

A realistic budget should be based on your actual income and spending. Consider all sources of revenue when determining your true monthly income, not just your working wages. You have to be certain that the money that is going in is more than the money that is going out.

Make a list of all your expenses Keeping track of your spending will help you understand what you have been spending your money on. Add all your expenses on this list, including those that are due once a year. You also need to account for unexpected expenses such as minor emergencies or repairs. You also need to set aside money for relaxing activities that you consistently spend money on, such as your TV subscription. You want to get the most accurate picture of your budget that is possible.

Before you start to formulate a budget plan, compile a list of your income and expenses. Then, see what you can eliminate from what you spend. Stopping at a cafe on your way to work can cost you both time and money versus brewing your coffee at home and bringing it with you in a reusable cup. There are lots of places where small cuts can be made.

If you suddenly notice that your utility bills are rising, it may be time to change out your mechanical systems. Try buying newer, more energy efficient windows to help lower heating and cooling costs. Tankless water heaters can provide additional savings. If your water bill seems too high, look for ways that you can reduce it, such as repairing leaks in faucets or pipes. Only use your dishwasher when it?s full of dirty dishes. Don?t run it half full; you?ll use more energy and spend more money.

Replacing old appliances with energy-smart models leads to saving money in the long run. Also, be sure to unplug electrical items you are not using. By unplugging appliances you will be saving money on electric costs.

Several home improvement projects will return their implementation costs to your pockets in time through decreasing your utility bills. Improve your house with a new roof and proper insulation so that heating and cooling your home is less costly.

Save money by replacing old appliances with newer ones that will consume less energy. Even though there is expense associated with these upgrades, they pay for themselves over time with energy savings and lower maintenance costs.

Mitt Embraces His RomneyCare Past

Mitt Romney gave a blockbuster interview to Fox News Sunday's host Chris Wallace, and in it he said he's "very proud" of his?Massachusetts?health care policy that served as a partial inspiration for the Affordable Care Act.?"I?m the guy who was able to get all the health care for all the women and men for my state," Romney said. "They were talking about it at the federal level. We actually did something and we did it without cutting Medicare and without raising taxes." Health care came up after Wallace asked about women's health issues, and Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape" from last weekend.?"Oh, I think it was a terrible statement on his part," he said. "I think it was uninformed. I think it was outrageous and offensive...?I think I have distanced myself from the kind of thing he said as far as I possibly can," Romney added. "He was wrong. And it?s obviously being used by Democrats to try to cast a shadow on our entire party and it?s not. Leaders of our party have pretty much unanimously said, 'Mr. Akin get out of the race. You?ve said something which is highly offensive.'"

He also defended his oft-cited-by-Dems-in-attacks bank accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands. "Well, first of all, there was no reduction, not one dollar reduction in taxes by virtue of having an account in Switzerland or a Cayman Islands investment," he said. "The dollars of taxes remained exactly the same. There was no tax savings at all." He said his blind trustee made decisions?"entirely consistent with U.S. law and all the taxes paid were those legally owed and there was no tax savings by virtue of these entities." When asked why didn't defend his foreign investments sooner, Romney said it was because he doesn't have anything to hide.?"I could have said don?t make any investments in any foreign companies, in any foreign bonds, in any foreign currencies, only U.S. entities, and by the way don?t buy foreign products, don?t have any Japanese TVs or foreign cars, yeah, I could have done that," he said. "But I did live my life. And I expect by virtue of disclosing all these things, people can take a look at that and see whether that?s something their comfortable with.?I?m not going to try to hide who I am and try to manipulate my life to try to avoid the truth," Romney said.?

Reince Priebus promised Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that Hurricane Isaac won't stop the GOP from nominating Mitt for President, or from having a good time. Wallace asked if there was a chance the storm could shut down the convention.?"No, I doubt that Chris, I think that the show is going to go on," Priebus said. "We?re going to get the business done at the RNC. We?re going to nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. We?re going to have a great time in Tampa." Priebus said the decision to delay the start of the convention?"was done out of an abundance of cautious for our delegates and guests here in Tampa," and he assured people's safety would be considered over the rest of the week. "Obviously we?ve got to take it as it comes. We?re going to be nimble. We?re going to make sure we do the right thing. Safety first. And obviously we want to make sure that everyone, no matter where you are, is safe in this storm."

Pulling double duty on CNN's State of the Union, Priebus tried to downplay Romney's controversial birther joke. "I think it's a nothing," he said.?"Have we really gotten to the point where we can't have any levity at all in politics?" Priebus asked. "We have gotten to a place in politics that is just ridiculous. No one can say anything that's remotely humorous. The president makes jokes about this all the time." Priebus failed to mention how worked up the Romney camp got when Obama joked about Seamus the dog.?

Martin O'Malley said the Republican party has operating on a not-so-subtly white focused agenda lately in an interview on State of the Union.?"When you have a party that says coded things, that makes totally false ads up, falsely saying the president is trying to undo welfare reform, I think you're going to see a lot of heavily and not-so-subtly coded messages from the Romney-Ryan campaign," O'Malley said when asked about the GOP appealing to white voters.?"What people are going to see very clearly, simply in the pictures that come in to their living rooms of these two conventions, is a party of exclusion, and a party of inclusion," he said. "The Republicans have painted themselves into a demographic corner, if you will. You hear people, like even Jeb Bush, saying that they have to change for the long-term because this view of white, Anglo-Saxon America, 'I'm a true American, no one questions where I was born' sort of thing is very offputting to us who believe that our diversity is our strength." O'Malley said that the tone of the Romney campaign for a while has been very white-centric.?"I think the birther comment, when you combine it with Mitt Romney's other comments, the comments he made abroad, about the president not truly appreciating, when he was in England, the Anglo-Saxon perspective on the world, when you put it together with some of his anti-immigrant policies and the things that he has said, I think what it reveals is a sort of perspective on America that would take us back to the days of 'Ozzie and Harriet' rather than recognizing that we in fact a strong people because we are a diverse people."

O'Malley was directly referencing comments Jeb Bush made about the GOP's demographic focus in an interview that aired on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday. "I'm concerned over the long haul, for sure," Bush said. "Our demographics are changing. And we have to change not necessarily our core beliefs, but the tone of our message and our message and the intensity of it, for sure... This is going to be a close election. Long-term, if conservatives principles our going to be successful and implemented, there has to be a concerted effort to reach out to a broader audience than we do today." He also told President Obama to stop blaming his brother for all of America's problems. "I think it's time for [Obama] to move on," he said. "I mean, look, the guy was dealt a difficult hand, no question about it. But he's had three years, his policies have failed. Rather than blame others, and I know that we were taught that that was kind of unbecoming, over time, you just can't keep doing that, maybe offer some fresh solutions to the problems that we face. But that's not going to happen between now and election day."?

Marco Rubio said he doesn't like Todd Akin's chances to win the Missouri Senate race in an interview on CBS's Face the Nation. He said it would be almost impossible for Akin to pull off a victory after his "legitimate rape" comments.?"As far as that particular race is concerned, absolutely, I believe his statements make it much more difficult, borderline impossible perhaps, for him to win that race," Rubio said. "I think that?s been clearly communicated to him both publicly and privately by a whole host of voices so we?ll see what decision he makes going forward." Rubio said he doesn't think Akin will?jeopardize?Romney's chances of being elected President, but he is jeopardizing the Republicans' chances of taking the Senate.?"I think he's been informed of that," Rubio said. "Ultimately, he has to make the decision he feels is right. Everyone has informed him what the political consequences are."

BEIRUT (AP) ? Row upon row of bloodied bodies wrapped in colorful blankets laid out on a mosque floor in a Damascus suburb. Long narrow graves tightly packed with dozens of victims. Nestled among them, two babies were wrapped in a single blood-soaked blanket, a yellow pacifier dangling beside them from a palm frond.

Evidence mounted on Sunday of a new massacre in Syria's deepening civil war, with activists reporting a killing spree by government forces after they seized the suburb of Daraya from rebel control three days ago. Reports of the death toll ranged from more than 300 to as many as 600.

Video footage posted by activists showed lineups of corpses, many of them men with gunshot wounds to their heads. During mass burials on Sunday, bodies were sprayed with water from hoses ? a substitute for the ritual washing prescribed by Islam in the face of so many dead.

The gruesome images appeared to expose the lengths to which the regime of authoritarian President Bashar Assad was willing to go to put down the rebellion that first broke out in March last year.

In an ominous commentary, Assad was quoted by his official media as saying his regime would carry on fighting "whatever the price."

"It is clear that was collective punishment," Khaled Al-Shami, an activist from Damascus, said of the killings in Daraya. "I am certain that the coming days will reveal more massacres, but by then others will have taken place and people will forget about Daraya."

The video footage and death toll were impossible to independently verify because of severe restrictions on media coverage of the conflict. However activists and residents have reported excessive use of force by the regime, with indiscriminate bombing from the air and ground.

"Daraya, a city of dignity, has paid a heavy price for demanding freedom," the Local Coordination Committees activist group said in a statement, adding that the Assad regime targeted residents with executions and revenge killings "regardless of whether they were men, women or children."

With a population of about 200,000, Daraya is part of "Rural Damascus," or Reef Damascus, a province that includes the capital's suburbs and farmland. It has been a stronghold of support for the rebels fighting the government since the start of the uprising, posing a particularly grave threat to Assad's seat of power.

Troops backed by tanks stormed the town on Thursday after a siege that lasted several days during which no one was allowed to enter or leave, activists and residents said. The rebels were no match for Assad's tanks and helicopter gunships.

Most of the killings, according to activists, took place Friday and Saturday. But the extent of the carnage only began to be revealed Sunday.

The British-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 45 more dead bodies were found in the streets of Daraya on Sunday and that they had been killed by "gunfire and summary executions." Among them, it said, were three women and two children. It said the toll for the past week was at least 320.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the observatory's director, said activists on the ground identified 207 of the 320.

The Local Coordination Committees also reported 45 deaths Sunday and said 300 bodies were discovered a day earlier in Daraya, with a total of 633 people killed there since the government launched its assault. It said 1,755 people had been detained in Daraya, suggesting that hundreds more might turn up dead.

Video footage posted by the group showed rows of bodies wrapped in blood-soaked blankets, with date palms and tree branches strewn over them. Someone was shown spraying the bodies with a hose, a substitute for the ritual washing of the dead prescribed by Islam's teachings.

Another video posted on the Internet and dated Saturday showed dozens of bodies on the blood-splattered floor of a mosque. Pieces of paper were placed on some of them, presumably identifying them. The anonymous commentator, his voice choking, said there were at least 150 bodies there and blamed a pro-government militia known as shabiha for the killings.

A third video showed several dozen bodies, some in white shrouds, stacked next to each other in what appeared to be a courtyard of a mosque or a large home.

A photograph circulated by the Shaam News Network showed two babies, their pajama tops soaked in blood, wrapped in a blanket decorated with blue and white flowers. It said they were among dozens of victims buried Sunday in a mass grave.

Al-Shami, the Damascus activist, and Abdul-Rahman said Daraya was under a de facto curfew Sunday, as Assad's forces carried out house-to-house searches as well as execution-style killings. The Internet had been disconnected by authorities, said Al-Shami, who did not use his real name for fear of reprisals.

The fighting in Dayara, according to activists, is being carried out by the Syrian army's elite 4th Division, which is led by Assad's brother, Maher. The division is by far the best trained and armed outfit and is primarily tasked with securing the capital.

One theory as to what triggered such a large-scale military operation was that rebel mortar teams have targeted the capital's military Mazzeh airport, which abuts Daraya. Activists said the regime was intent on protecting the facility as a potential gateway out of the capital for Assad and pillars of his regime if the situation dramatically worsens.

Britain's Middle East minister, Alistair Burt, said on Sunday that if confirmed, the Daraya killings "would be an atrocity on a new scale requiring unequivocal condemnation from the entire international community."

Still, the battle for Daraya showed the regime to be struggling to control Damascus and its suburbs, though the firepower available to it is far superior to anything the rebels might have. Government forces are stretched thin, with a major ongoing battle for control of the nation's largest city, Aleppo in the north, as well as smaller-scale operations in the east and south.

A total of 213 people were killed in fighting Sunday, according to the Observatory.

Activists say more than 20,000 people have died in 17 months of fighting in Syria, as an uprising that started with peaceful protests against Assad's rule has morphed into a civil war.

In Damascus, meanwhile, Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa appeared in public on Sunday for the first time in weeks, ending rumors that he had defected. Reporters saw him get out of his car and walk to his office for a meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of Iran's powerful parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy.

There have been a series of high-level defections from the Assad regime in the past few months.

Al-Sharaa was last seen at the funeral of four top security officials killed in a blast in Damascus on July 18. Since then, there had been rumors that he defected to Jordan, though al-Sharaa's office and Jordan repeatedly denied that.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, meanwhile, several thousand Syrians gathered at the Bab al-Salameh border crossing, having fled airstrikes in their northern towns and villages. They squatted on the sidewalks of three large hangars once used for cargo inspections of trucks. Some said they had been there a week or more.

Mohammed Abdel-Hay, 41, said his family of seven fled the village of Marea after a regime warplane bombed it last week, destroying a house and killing two people.

"They shelled us and we didn't leave. They hit us with helicopters and we didn't leave. Then they brought warplanes that dropped huge bombs that destroyed entire houses and we left," he said.

Since then, the family had staked out a patch of sidewalk where they sat on a plastic mat with a few grain sacks full of clothes.

Mustafa Khatib, 40, a middle school principal from the same village, was living in the hangar with his wife and their five children.

It had only one set of latrines, which the women and children used; the men used nearby fields. Water was in short supply and Khatib said he hadn't showered in a week. He said he'd eaten only a piece of bread and a hard-boiled egg all day Sunday.

Like most of the families, he hoped to get into a refugee camp in Turkey, but had been told there was no room.

"We'll stay here and wait and see," he said. "Every day, we ask and they tell us today or tomorrow, but they've been saying that for a week and we're still here."
